About the volcano • Found within the Democrat Republic of Congo, Nyiragongo can be considered the most active volcano in Africa. It is a stratovolcano, which is a steep, tall volcano composed of many coatings of hardened lava and volcanic ash. They are known for their reoccurring eruptions.
The volcano is 3470m tall, located within the Virunga Mountains there are only 7 other volcanoes within the mountain range. It’s peak, which is 1 km wide, is 2,000m over head of its surrounding Lake Kivu. There is a town, Goma, that is dangerously near the volcano. The towns people live off the nutritional land, the volcano brings within the lava.
On January 17th 2002 a large eruption, which disestablished the towns boundaries below. It destroyed 16,000 homes. The eruption covered one fifth of the town. 100 deaths recorded and 350, 000 left homeless. Both the UN and USA together donated 26 million dollars in aid of the town of Goma. Within the range of the 8 volcanoes two erupted within that year alone.
