LNS Superconducting Cyclotron in Catania is the unique machine in in Italy and South Europe used for protontherapy
Why clinical proton beams? • penetration depth is well-defined and adjustable • most energy at end-of -range • protons travel instraight lines • dose tonormal tissueminimised • no dose beyond target
MEDICAL APPLICATION OF THE CATANA FACILITY • Choroidal Melanoma • 85 - 90 % successfully treating with proton beams • About 300 new cases for year in Italy • In the world 5000 patients have been already treated with proton beams • Age related subfoveal macular degenerations with subretinal neovascular membrane • This is the main cause of third age blindness in EC countries • It is a “social disease” for EC INFN - LNS
PRESENT TREATMENT ROOM • 0 ° respect the switching magnet • 80 meter after extraction • 3 m proton beam line LAYOUT OF LNS

Geant4 applications in prothon therapyour goals • Three dimensions dose distribution verification in water at isocenter in the treatment conditions Comparison with experimental and treatment planning data • Simulation, design and realization of critical elements of a proton beam line • Scattering system • Modulation system • Collimators along the beam line
