What is Aprendamos? • An academic and cultural enrichment program for elementary students and their parents: • Multiple Literacies • Popular Education: • Paulo Friere, “Banking Model of Education” • Collaboration • Curriculum: • Tutoring – math/ELA for standardized tests. • Thematic Units + Project Based-Learning

  3. Who is our Audience? Esperanza Elementary School Aprendamos • Public school (track system) • 2nd through 5th graders • Children of immigrants • Speak Spanish, English, indigenous languages

Mutual Goals • Integrate into existing curriculum. • Multimedia: easy to learn, easy to teach • Create projects that are fun and that students are proud of. • Implement technologies in simple, but smart ways. (repeatable and sustainable) • Teach multiple literacies in the process • Projects are collaborative and hands-on.

  7. 1. Timeline + Media Journal Project - Connect to themes of personal identity, family narrative, and migration. - Import their own media (created in workshop or brought from home).

  8. Dipity and VoiceThread Dipity: Multimedia timelines. VoiceThread: Group conversations around media. • Family timelines. • Personal timelines. • Education timelines: elementary through college and beyond. • Talk about media they shoot using cameras and cell phones.

  9. 2. Mapping Project - Could work well with social studies/language arts curriculum. - Mapping and neighborhoods, “community detectives.” - Integrate with VozMob platform.

  10. KCET – Departures + Maplib Departures MapLib

  11. Scavenger Hunts + Vozmob Ideas: • Integrating with field trip or just in school yard. • Upload pics to map and build digital “tours”

  12. 3. Informational Video - Use media from other projects. - Edit and shoot with students.

  13. Challenges • Sensitivity to cultural differences • Multiple age groups, number of students. • Integrating with curriculum. • Time.

  14. Thematic Units • Week 3 – March 21st => Family (Immigration) • Week 4 – March 28th => Family (Immigration) • Week 5 - April 4th => Community (Health) • Week 6 – April 11th => Community (Environmental Justice) • Week 7 – April 18th => Evaluation (Social Justice)

  15. Every Week • Mini-Workshops: • Coming in every Tuesday (2:30 – 4:30) • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday – 1 hour devoted to working on projects. • Friday staff meetings
