  5. The OICA Methodology of Bible Study • Inductive Bible Study - Reading data from the passage • Deductive Bible Study - Reading data into the passage

  6. What is the OICA? • O: Observation – what does it say? • I: Interpretation – what does it mean? • C: Correlation – Where else does it say in the Bible? • A: Application – How does this relate to my daily life?

  7. Observation • Who is involved? • What are they doing? • Where are they? Where are they going? • When did this happen, what happened before, and what will happen afterwards?

  8. Avoiding Traps • Speed reading • Trusting our mind • Giving up

  9. Interpretation • What does this passage mean? • How would the original readers have understood this passage? • What is the author trying to say to me? • Why is this here?

  10. Keep in Mind • When the plain sense of the Bible makes common sense, seek no other meaning

  11. Principles of Interpretation • Interpret • Research • Evaluate • Discover • Study

  12. Correlation • When we correlate, we are bringing up sections from other parts of the chapter, book, or entire bible that help us to understand the section we are studying. • (Mt 8:14, 15; Mk 1:30-31; Lk 4:38-39)

  13. Application (1) • Is there a command for me to obey? • Is there a good example for me to follow? • Is there a sin here for me to avoid? • Is there something here I want to thank God for? • Is there a promise I can call my own?

  14. Application (2) • Is there a blessing I can enjoy? • Is there a failure from which I can learn? • Is there a victory for me to win? • Is there a truth in this passage that has greatly affected me?
