Why Different Foods in Different Regions? • Level of Development- people in developed countries tend to consumer more food and from different sources than people do in developing countries • Physical Conditions- Climate influences what is grown and then what is consumed • Developed countries food is shipped long distances • Cultural Preferences- some food preference and avoidances are expressed without regard to the above factors
Total Consumption of Food • Dietary Energy Consumption- the amount of food that an individual consumes • Kilocalorie and calorie • Humans derive most of their kilocalories through consumption of cereal grain- grass that yields grain for food • Maize (corn,) wheat, and rice (40%)
Source of Nutrients • Protein is needed for growth and maintenance of the human body—where a country gets the majority of its protein tells a lot about the people there • The primary difference between LDC and MDC is the source of protein in their diets
