  2. The TEN Pillars of Character The Original Six…. And now there are ten…. • Trustworthiness • Respect • Responsibility • Fairness • Caring • Citizenship • Honesty • Courage • Diligence • Integrity

  3. Trustworthiness • Be honest • Don’t deceive, cheat or steal • Be reliable — do what you say you’ll do • Have the courage to do the right thing • Build a good reputation • Be loyal — stand by your family, friends and country

  4. Respect • Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements

  5. Responsibility • Do what you are supposed to do • Persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act — consider the consequences • Be accountable for your choices

  6. Fairness • Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be open-minded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly

  7. Caring • Be kind • Be compassionate and show you care • Express gratitude Forgive others • Help people in need

  8. Citizenship • Do your share to make your school and community better • Cooperate • Get involved in community affairs • Stay informed; vote • Be a good neighbor • Obey laws and rules • Respect authority • Protect the environment

The Remaining Four…. • Honesty • Choosing to tell the truth in our words and actions • Courage • An inner strength that stands up for beliefs and convictions, even when others don’t agree with you • Diligence • The ability to work hard and strive for excellence in all we do • Integrity • Living a life that is consistent with our own values and convictions

  10. Your Assignment…. • We will be taking a look at each pillar individually. • To start the unit off, write a sentence using each pillar of character as if it is a vocabulary word. • Your sentence should show how you demonstrate the pillar, or how you appreciate the pillar being demonstrated by others. • Use what you have learned in this PowerPoint as a frame of reference for each pillar.
