  1. timeline •  Marquette and Joliet found the unusual Tower Rock in 1673 • La Salle passed by in 1682 • In 1698, missionaries put three crosses on the island. • Lewis and Clark came by Tower Rock in 1803 • In 1839, John Davis and Penelope Pike were married on the rock • "Plymouth Rock" for 750 Lutherans from Germany who landed here in 1839  • 1870s ferry crossing the mississippi • President Ulysses S. Grant himself stepped in to save Grand Tower Rock in 1871 • Grand Tower Plant was first placed in service in November 1924 • 47-megawatt Unit 3 was completed on Jan. 1, 1951 • 104-megawatt Unit 4 was placed in service in March 1958 • Tower Rock Ferry shortly after it started operating in October of 1966 • Powerplants Units 1 and 2 were retired in September 1972 • 1993 flood • Lewis & Clark re-enactors came by in November, 2003
