  4. Define: ASG • ASG is a student-led organization that acts as an organized voice for all students and strives to effectively represent student interests.

  5. ASG’s Purpose • “The Associated Student Government shall act as an organized voice for all students of the University of Arkansas, to effectively represent students in the University’s decision and policy making process and to provide a broad educational experience for students, while promoting citizenship on campus and in the greater community.  In doing so, ASG knowingly and responsibly recognizes the students’ roles in the shared governance of the University of Arkansas.”

Organizational Structure • Executive • Executive Committee: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, the Chair of the Senate, & the Chief of Staff • Cabinet: 53 appointed positions in 5 commissions (Outreach, Campus Life, Governance, University, and Communication) • Judicial • 9 Justices, 2 Judicial Proxies, and Judicial Appointed Positions • Legislative • 51 Senators • University Committees • About 70 individuals appointed by the ASG VP • Fresh H.O.G.S. • Freshman leaders selected via application and interview

Organizational Structure • Membership • Nearly 200 members make up the active membership of ASG. • Budget • ASG’s budget is at $700,000 with a majority of that allocated to RSO’s. • Programs • Safe Ride • Razorback Readership • President’s Council Scholarship • Clicker Check Out • Events • Rolling with the Razorbacks • Faculty Appreciation Banquet • Welcome Back Cookout • Town Halls

Senate Goals for the 2012-2013 • Accountable and Open • Voting records and legislation online • Senate streamed online • Produce Legislation • Every senator will write one piece of legislation to be voted on by Senate each semester • Active Involvement • Student/administrative collaboration in solving problems

Responsibilities • Senate Meetings • Tuesday nights 6pm in Graduate Education Auditorium • Committee Work • Serve on at least one Senate standing committee • Ethics, Appropriations, Parking and Transit, Press Relations, Campus Safety, Constitution and Code, Sustainability and Campus Environment, Academics, Campus Life, and Diversity • Legislation Generation • Write one piece per semester

  10. Benefits • Discover interest in issues • Friendships • Meet University leaders • Gain a better understanding of University workings • Experience personal growth • Gain practical experience and application of skills developed in the classroom • Senate is reciprocal

How the Elections Work • Any student enrolled in 1 credit hour is eligible to vote • Elections online at vote.uark.edu • Paper ballots are available in OSA (ARKU A665) • Login using UARK ID (without @uark.edu) and password • Choose college of enrollment • Must choose one college if dual enrolled • Students will have the ability to vote for a block equal to the number of seats available • For example, WCOB students can vote for up to 8 senators • Online Candidate Database • Application Question, Biographies, & Pictures

  12. 2013-2014 Seat Allocation • Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural Food & Life Sciences- 4 seats • Fay Jones School of Architecture- 2 seats • William J. Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences- 13 seats • College of Education and Health Professions- 7 seats • College of Engineering- 5 seats • Sam Walton College of Business- 7 seats • Graduate School & School of Law- 7 seats • Newly Admitted At-Large- 5 (Fall 2013 Election) * SP 2013 14th Class Day Enrollment Numbers

Election Specifics • Dates • Friday, 2.15.13: Applications due at asgforms.uark.edu by Noon. • Monday, 2.25.13: Senate Candidates notified of official candidacy via e-mail from Elections Commissioner • Monday, 3.4.13: University wide campaigning begins at 12:01 am • Monday, 3.11.13: Voting begins at 9 am • Thursday, 3.14.13: Voting ends at 4 pm • Friday, 3.15.13: Expenditure Reports dueat 12 pm noon; Violation Complaints due by 4pm

Violations • Violations of the regulations as stated in this Statement on Elections – Elections Guidelines may include, but are not limited to: • Campaigning before permitted* • Libel/slander* • Posting campaign material in an improper location* • Use of ListServs without prior approval by the Elections Commissioner* • Remember, the candidate is liable for any and all violations committed on their behalf • All complaints must be submitted in writing (no anonymous complaints will be accepted) using official form in election packet or at ARKU A665 • All complaints will be heard by ASGJ **Hearing process is quick; be ready!

Running a Campaign • Planning • Platform: submitted via asgforms.uark.edu • Fundraising & Budgeting • Coordinating a campaign with an Executive candidate is NOT allowed. • Outreach • Meet & Greet • RSOs • E-Mail Lists (approvals) • Visibility • Chalking: Sidewalks ONLY!!! • Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube • Flyers: Adhere to all rules & regulations of the building. • NO STICKERS! • Administrative • Submit Expenditure Reports WITH receipts! • Use of University Logo requires Trademark Request Form • Use of University Facility Space requires Facility Request Form

  17. Fact or Fake? Stickers are a great campaign tool in this elections. FAKE! It’s not allowed to coordinate my campaign with an Executive candidate. FACT! The use of ListServs is ok if approved by the ASG Advisor. FAKE! Submitting my Expenditure report without receipts could cause me the election. Fact!
