  2. OFFICE OF THE VICE PROVOST FORACADEMIC AFFAIRS • ABET Evaluation of Engineering Programs at Missouri S&T has been scheduled for October 19th – 21st. William J. Wepfer is the team chair and Joseph Hughes is the co-chair, both are from Georgia Tech. • Porth Lecture Series presented Dr. Donald D. Carpenter, Associate Professor and Director Center for Teaching and Learning, Lawrence Technological University, Southfield, Michigan. Dr. Carpenter conducted two seminars in regard to Ethical Development of Engineering Students. • Missouri S&T has been invited to participate in the 2008 Boeing-St. Louis Engineering Job Shadow Program on Friday, October 3rd. Six students have been selected to participate. • The Department Chairs Council, Personnel Committee, and the Faculty Standing Personnel Committee have done a great job in regard to the Non-Tenure Track policies.

  3. Enrollment Management • We are up 8 in First Time College (FTC) enrolled numbers, which is 0.7% from last year. • We are up 17 in First time Transfer (TRE) enrolled numbers, which is 6.4% from last year. •  We are up 49 First time Graduate (GRAD) enrolled numbers, which is 12.1% from last year. Taken from the 2nd week enrollment grid 9-8-08

  4. Office of Graduate Studies Recognized by the National Organization for Research Chicago (NORC) for achieving over 90% response rate on the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) for academic year 2007. A high response rate means that Missouri S&T is well-represented in the survey, making data on all our research doctorates available for analysis.

  5. Office of Graduate Studies Revised Graduate Catalog officially released for 2008/09. Revised graduate forms effective as of June 1, 2008. The graduate catalog and graduate forms revisions are the result of an intensified effort to improve graduate services at Missouri S&T.

  6. School of Extended Learning • International Affairs has received notification from Gulf University for Science and Technology that the project entitled “Collaboration in Development of Programs in the New GUST College of Engineering” has been funded in the amount of $1,956,700. This grant will allow Missouri S&T to help GUST develop ABET accredited engineering programs in several disciplines.

  7. School of Extended Learning • The number of on-line distance sections being taught is at an all time high as shown in the graph below:

Information Technology Upgrade to Blackboard 8.3 – completed August 2008 • The new version includes: • A new, easier-to-use Grade Center • The ability to integrate blogs and wikis for online collaboration • New timesaving features to help students and instructors organize course loads and assignments • Blackboard seminar series scheduled for Fall 2008

Information Technology • Call for proposals for Teaching and Learning Technology Conference (April 9-10, 2009) now available • TurningPoint 2008 installed • UC 105 and IDE 105 computer classrooms were upgraded • Engineering Management 222 is undergoing transformation to “casual computer learning space” similar to CS 212/213 • Visit http://edtech.mst.edu for more information

Office of Sponsored Programs FY09 activities through the end of August 2008 and a year-over-year comparison are as follows: Proposals awarded in total dollars: $13.71M (up 25.5%) Number of proposals awarded and amendments: 83 (up 25.8%) Proposals submitted in total dollars: $26.55M (up 21.1%) Number of proposals submitted: 114 (up 26.7%) Research expenditures: $7.9M (up 2.8%) F&A recovered: $1.4M (up 26.3%)

  12. Office of Sponsored Programs Congratulations to … Dr. Ming Leu – appointed as Fellow Member of the International Academy of Production Engineering Drs. Crow, Chowdhury, Corzine, Ferdowsi, Kimball and McMillin - Missouri S&T is one of five U.S. universities in the NSF’s Engineering Research Center for Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems

Division of Undergraduate Studies- September 2008 Announcements • Meet our New Team Members:The Office of Undergraduate Studies welcomes: Carol Smith, Manager First Year Experience Programs; Summer Young, Manager Second Year Experience Programs; Melissa (Folsom) Hutton, Experiential Learning Coordinator, and Lisa Sigler, Administrative Assistant. The Teacher Education Program has two new half time faculty members, Dr. Roger Berkbuegler and Mrs. Doyla Mentis.Dr. Chris Weisbrook, a faculty member in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering, has been appointed Assistant Director of Freshmen Engineering. She will join Dr. Jeff Cawlfield and Dr. F. Scott Miller in directing the program which advises now over 1600 students and is responsible for the FE10 class “Study and Careers in Engineering” which is a seminar class taught each Fall semester for the approximately 1,000 incoming freshmen interested in engineering. • Hit the Ground Running – This summer, HGR served the largest group to date with 142 participating students. • Re-Accreditation Self Study Document Review-The draft report is available on-line at: http://accreditation.mst.edu.  All Missouri S&T students, faculty and staff are encouraged to review the draft report and provide comments by September 5. Comments can be emailed to Dr. Harvest Collier, vice provost of undergraduate studies, at hcollier@mst.edu. An open forum will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 2 in the Havener Center to gather comments and suggestions. •  On-Track to Academic Success- On-Track begins August 27. During the Spring 08 semester, 71% of students who participated in the On Track course were able to raise their cumulative GPA by at least 0.5 and in some cases, up to 3 grade points. There was a positive correlation between the rise in GPA and students who attended four or more seminars. • Clickers in the Classroom- This fall, 25 Missouri S&T faculty members will use clickers in 18 individual courses, impacting approximately 1,650 students across the campus.   • New! Faculty Service Learning Award-In 2008, The Office of Undergraduate Studies will award a select Missouri S&T faculty member who involves or influence students in academic service learning or community service activities outside the classroom.  Nominations are due September 30, 2008.  The recipient of the 2008 Faculty Service Learning Award will be recognized at a campus award ceremony on October 22, 2008, in conjunction with National Make a Difference Day.
