  1. Your Guide to Periodontal Disease Stages Periodontal Disease is a medical term for gum disease that occurs in the area of the mouth between your upper and lower teeth. The word "periodontal" comes from the Greek words "period" meaning tooth and "ontos" meaning root. This dental problem affects the lower jaw as well as the upper jaw. Periodontal disease is the root of most oral problems. Periodontal (hypoglossal) disease is a gum infection of the soft tissues that hold in your teeth. It is usually caused by poor oral hygiene practices that leave plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, to form on your teeth and gums. In more advanced stages, periodontal disease may result in sore, bleeding gums; painful, swollen chewing surfaces; and even Tooth loss. Other causes of gum disease include genetics, certain

  2. medications, and unhealthy diet plans. Many factors contribute to gingivitis or periodontitis such as food, periodontal bacteria, and climate. Among the other systemic diseases that affect the body are heart disease, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease. These systemic diseases manifest themselves in different ways. Heart disease, for example, can cause the muscles in the heart to relax. This lowers blood pressure and decreases the pumping power of the heart. Diabetic individuals are more at risk of developing diabetic heart disease because they have greater levels of insulin resistance, which is associated with increased inflammation. Inflammatory bowel diseases include inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS) and Crohn's disease. IBS is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and rectal bleeding. When large numbers of bacteria proliferate in the gastrointestinal tract, the body produces an excess of digestive fluids, which in turn creates an acidic environment. When this occurs, oral bacteria (collections) begin to play a significant role in regulating the acidity and inflammation of the stomach. If left untreated, serious damage to the stomach lining can occur, which may lead to periodontitis? If you suffer from any of the symptoms of periodontal disease, it is important to visit your dentist regularly. Your dentist will perform comprehensive examinations to determine if there are any underlying health issues or if there is the possibility of additional resources needed to treat your current condition. Once your dentist has assessed the status of your oral health, he or she will be in a position to give you advice on how to prevent further damage or the development of any additional conditions that can benefit your well being. As previously stated, the treatment options for stage two and stage three periodontal disease are very different from the options available for stage one and stage zero conditions. Therefore, you must work closely with your periodontist and periodontal hygienist to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your needs. By adhering to your treatment plan, you can prevent the serious problems that can arise as a result of insufficient periodontal cleaning or excessive bacteria in the mouth. You can also reduce the risk of developing additional conditions by limiting the exposure that you have to bacteria and cleaning solutions.
