  2. Violence in Society • Teens are increasingly involved in violent crimes, either committing them or victims of them. • 2003 homicide was the 2nd leading cause of death for young people between 16-24 • 5,243 deaths • Homicide is the willful killing of one human being by another.

Why does violence happen • Unsuccessful efforts to resolve a conflict • Crimes of hate • Frustration or anger over poverty or lack of opportunity • Crimes are usually robberies or thefts, but sometimes people are killed or injured in the process • Random acts are committed for no particular reason

  4. Violence and Teens • Teens involved in violent acts are on the rise • 14.8% of students have been involved in a fight on school property at least once • Aggravated assault is significantly higher with young people ages 15-34 than any other age group • Aggravated assault is the unlawful attack with an intent to hurt or kill

  5. Violence in School • Teen violence is on the rise on the streets and in the schools • 16,000 crimes take place in or around schools • Fights, attacks, and shootings happen on school grounds • Gang involvement takes place in classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and in locker rooms

  6. Stressful Environment • Teachers find it hard to teach • Students difficult to learn • They are fearful • They want to fit in • Hard to focus • This has caused schools take preventive measures • Metal detectors • School resource officers • Physical searches for drugs of weapons

  7. Factors Affecting Violence • Availability of weapons: • hand gun, knives and assault rifles are finding their way into they hands of teens • Territoriality: usually involves gangs. • Often violence centers around drugs

  8. Factors Affecting Violence cont. • Media: TV, song lyrics, videos, movies, and video games carry images of or messages about violence • After carjackings were first report, there was an increase. • Viewers became desensitized or emotionally indifferent to acts of brutality

Factors Affecting Violence cont • Substance Abuse: the use of, or selling drugs has caused an increase in violence • Selling drugs has resulted in drive-by shootings • Drug users rob or steal to pay for their habit • Drugs exaggerate what a person is feeling and increase emotions such as jealousy and anger

  10. Stopping and Preventing Violence • Communities are trying to find healthful ways release energy and avoid becoming a assailant or victim of a violent crime • After school programs • Sports and camping programs • Video production and the arts programs • Businesses are funding programs that provide internships for teens who are “at risk” of violence

  11. What You Can Do • Avoid guns, drugs, and alcohol • Resist becoming a gang member • Learn the skills of communication and conflict resolution • Work at building your self-esteem • Limit your exposure to media that contains violence
