Introduction Text Astrophysics Inc, a leading designer, developer and manufacturer of x-ray inspection equipment for baggage screening in security applications. Headquartered in Southern California, USA. Supplying screening equipment in North & South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Middle East and Australia.
Astrophysics Management President & CTO: Francois Zayek • 24 years experience in instrumentation • VP of Research and Development and VP of Engineering for L3 Corp. (1995-2000) • Director of Research a Development of Bio-Imaging Research (1987-1995) • Consultant for Toshiba medical • Designed and developed new instrumentation based on x-ray backscatter for "Underground Mine Detection"
Astrophysics Management VP of Sales & Marketing: Phillip Wascher • Began his career in security equipment sales with Motorola C&E in Southern California in 1975 • Joined Philips Electronic Instruments in 1980 where he began his career in selling security screening systems to the aviation industry • Involved with the introduction of TIP, dual view 450 kV X-ray systems for air cargo, and networking checkpoints in US airports • Graduate of the University of Colorado in Business Administration and a member of ASIS
Astrophysics Management VP Engineering Operations: Michel Kamel • Co-Founder & Director, Space Launch Corporation • Served as Chief Technical Officer, and subsequently as the COO and CFO of Space Launch Corporation • Senior Scientist, Technanogy LLC • Has published and presented his results at more than a dozen national and international conferences and workshops • Ph.D in mechanical engineering from Stanford University • Co-founder of three non-profit organizations
Service Department Staff • Michel Kamel- Head • Tomas Frausto- B.S. in Computer Engineering from DeVry University • Alberto Garcia- Degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering from Instituto Technologico, MX • Rogelio Andrade B.S. in Computer Engineering from DeVry University
XIS System Description • PC based dual energy x-ray imaging system • Definition • Dual Energy Imaging: XIS measures and compares the transmission of high energy (high frequency) and low energy (low frequency) x-rays through items scanned. Material composition is then determined based on this comparison. • Allows for fast and accurate unobtrusive inspection
X-Ray Safety Radiation Quantities and Units • Absorbed Dose- (rad) mean energy imparted to matter by ionizing radiation per unit mass • Dose Equivalent- (H, rem) quantity used for radiation protection purposes. Product of absorbed dose (in rad) and modifying factor • Quality Factor- (QF) modifying factor used to determine dose equivalent
X-Ray Safety Quality Factor based on radiation type Example: Consider an absorbed dose of 0.1 rad from 2MeV neutrons. The dose equivalent is H = (Dose in rads)(QF) H = (0.1)(10) H = 1 rem
X-Ray Safety Annual Dosage Limit for Occupationally Exposed Personnel* * “Basic Radiation Protection Criteria.” National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) Report No. 39
X-Ray Safety Astrophysics XIS typical radiation leakage 0.1 mR/hr
X-Ray Safety Features • Lead shielded construction • Minimizes radiation leakage • Lead fabric curtains • Block scattered radiation from exiting tunnel • Interlock switches • Cuts power to x-ray generator and conveyor belt when access panel is opened or removed • Emergency Stop switches • Cuts power to x-ray generator and conveyor belt when depressed • KNOWLEDGEABLE AND EDUCATED OPERATOR
X-Ray Safety Precautions • Do … • Connect XIS to grounded outlet • Clear tunnel of any items before XIS is powered up • Keep all access panels closed during normal operation • Keep fingers away from conveyor belt edges and end rollers • Do NOT … • Operate XIS when curtains are torn or missing • Insert any part of the body into the tunnel when x-rays are energized • Allow entry of open liquid containers into tunnel • Allow any persons to sit or ride on conveyor bed
X-Ray Safety Regulation Compliance • XIS is recognized by U.S. FDA as a cabinet x-ray device • Complies with • U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 Parts 1020.40, Radiological Health Standards for Cabinet X-Ray Systems • U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, Code of Federal Regulations Title 14 Parts 108.17, Use of X-ray Systems. • U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, Code of Federal Regulations Title 14. Parts 129.26, Use of X-ray Systems.
X-Ray Safety Regulation Compliance • Local Regulatory Compliance • Some jurisdictions require registration of x-ray equipment PRIOR to use • Some jurisdictions require initial and annual radiation surveys • Some jurisdictions require employees to wear personal dosimeters to measure exposure to ionizing radiation • Check local and federal regulations
Using Astrophysics XIS Four phases of operation • System Startup • Login • X-Ray Screening • System Shutdown
XIS Startup Procedures • System Startup Procedures • Insert key into key-switch • Turn key-switch from vertical “OFF” position to horizontal “ON” position • Wait for “Please Log In” screen (approx. 2 min.)

Imaging Function Definitions • Org function: Highlights organic material and de-emphasizes inorganic material • In-Org function: Highlights inorganic material and de-emphasizes organic material • Contrast Adjustment function: Used as a guide to determine object density. Dense objects are displayed in dark tones; less dense in lighter tones. • B/W function: Displays image in standard black and white mode • Rev function: Inverts standard black and white image • Pseudo function: Applies coloration to black and white image • Atom function: Gives the z-number (atomic number) of suspicious objects
