All About Me • My background: • I grew up in the Kansas City area. • I attended Belinder Elementary, Indian Hills Junior High, and SM East High School. I went to Drake University in Des Moines, IA. • My experience: • I taught English in Japan for 2 years. • I have also taught pre-school, first and fifth grades, but fifth grade is my favorite!

My Goals • To give you the academic and social and life skills you need to progress to sixth grade. • To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. • To help you make new friends

Reading • Improve oral reading fluency. • Develop a joy of reading for pleasure. • Read a variety of genres. • Monthly book reports
Writing • Journal blogging. • Research and write about an American Hero. • Use the writing process.

Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. • Our class rules are: • Be Responsible • Be Respectful • Build Relationships
Classroom Expectations • 1st Consequence: Polite Warning • 2nd Consequence: Quietly move to the Safe Seat to help ourselves learn without further distractions. • 3rd Consequence: Move to a buddy room Safe Seat and complete a Think Sheet about the undesirable behavior. (Mrs. Vickers – 6th grade) • 4th Consequence: Move to Recovery Room
Entering the classroom in the morning. • Wait for teacher to give permission to enter. • Go directly to desk or locker to unpack binder/planner. • Hang up backpack and coats • Turn in forms, lunch money, homework • Sharpen 3 pencils for the day • Begin morning work.
Attendance & Homework • Have planners open to the correct page during morning work. • Greet Mrs. Cohen politely when she greets you. • Place a check by your name when you have turned in your homework.
I’m finished with my work; now what? • Remain in your seat with your completed work on the corner of your desk. • Work on other incomplete work, fill in planner, etc… • Read quietly in your seat.
Asking and Answering Questions • Raise your hand • Wait patiently to be called on • Speak directly to the teacher or so that the entire class can hear you clearly.
Specials • Monday – no specials • Tuesday- Music 9:20-9:50 PE 9:50-10:20 • Wednesday- Library 9:30-10:20 • Thursday- Music 9:20-9:50 PE 9:50-10:20 • Friday- Art 9:20-10:20 • Line Leader must be responsible for bringing the classroom clipboard.
Restroom Usage • Always take the opportunity to use the restroom when we are travelling to and from Specials, recess and lunch or wherever appropriate. You will be provided at least two opportunities each day.
Restroom Usage, continued • Emergency?? Use one of your “stick” passes. • On Friday, all remaining sticks will be collected. Three sticks will be drawn for a prize.
How do we line up? • Wait to hear from the teacher when your row is called. • Follow the given paths; NO RACING! • Stand on middle tiles only. • Avoid touching cabinets and furniture. • Respect personal space.
Walking in the hallway • Line leader will only follow TEACHER DIRECTION. He/she will stop at designated places only and wait for NON-VERBAL directions. • Walk along 2nd tile from the wall. • The walls are for admiring only. LET’S PRACTICE!!
Work Requirements • Always make sure your signature and date (MM/DD/YY) are on the top of your paper. • Always write neatly and large enough print to read. • Incomplete work will be sent as homework and must be turned in the following day.
Recognition and Rewards • Positive notes to parents • Blue Bucks: opportunity for a drawing when I catch you making good choices

Dismissal • Complete planner (2:55-3:00) • Afternoon Announcements : FREEZE in your seat • Safety Patrol (3:05) • Walkers (3:10-walk down North stairs and out West doors) • Car Riders (3:10-walk down South stairs; sit in lobby with all 5th graders; wait quietly; listen for your name on the radio. • Stacking Chairs
Classroom Community • Use common sense at all times. • Be the least disruptive. • Consider how your actions might affect others. REMEMBER
Homework • I will assign about 30-45 minutes of homework every night. This includes a minimum of 15-20 minutes of reading. It usually consists of Math and Spelling. • Your homework is due on the following day unless told otherwise.
Tardiness • School starts at 8:10 A.M. • If you aren’t in the classroom by the time the bell rings, you are TARDY. Please check in at the school office before coming to class. • If you are tardy four times, the school will contact your parents.
Field Trips • We have lots of fun field trips planned for this year! • Kansas State Capital in Topeka and Kansas History Museum. • Heroes presentation at SM South. • Mahaffie Farmstead
