  2. Section 1: How is Water Important? Pages 16-22

  3. How do people use water? • Household purposes • Agriculture • Industry • Transportation • Recreation

  4. Household Purposes • The water we use in our homes is just a small percentage of all the water used in the United States. • What do you use water for at home? • List at least 5 different ways that you use water in your home.

  5. Agriculture (farming) • A constant supply of fresh water is essential to a farmer. • Irrigation is the process of supplying water to areas of land to make them suitable for growing crops. • In the US, more water is used for irrigating farmland than any other single purpose.

  6. Industry (factories) • Water is used to produce most objects. Water may not be part of the final product but it is part of the industrial process. (ex. Paper) • Power plants and steel mills need huge volumes of water to cool down hot machinery. • Food processing industry uses water to clean fruits and vegetables.

  7. Transportation • Oceans and rivers have been used for transporting people and goods since ancient times. • Most large cities are located along the coasts.

  8. Recreation (playing in the water!) • What are some fun things you like to do with water? List at least 5 different things in the box. • Swimming • Boating • Fishing • Skiing • Ice skating

  9. Water and Living Things • Water makes up nearly two thirds of your body. • Water is essential for living things to grow, reproduce, and carry out other important processes. • Plants use water to make food in a process called photosynthesis. • Water is home, or a habitat, for some animals; both fresh and salt water.

  10. Water on Earth • Oceans cover nearly 71% of Earth’s surface. • 97% of Earth’s water is salt water while only 3% is fresh water. • Of that 3%, most is frozen in ice or in the atmosphere. • Water vapor is the gaseous form of water, it is found in the atmosphere.

  11. Water on Earth Types of water on earth • Oceans • Ice • Rivers and Lakes • Groundwater

  12. Water on Earth • How does water get underground? • Water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers is called groundwater.

  13. Words Worth Knowing (ISN #39) • Irrigation • Habitat • Water vapor • Groundwater • Photosynthesis • Industry • Agriculture
