Collection Development for Young Adult Graphic Novel Collections Gettin’ the Goods November 2008 By Stacey Bale stacey.bale@camden.nsw.gov.au
Camden Libraries • Camden Council area is located in Sydney’s south-western suburbs, about 60 kilometres from the Sydney CBD • We have a current population of 52 000. Located in the SouthWest Growth Area, this is projected to increase to 300000 within the next 20 years. • 19% of the population is between 12-24. 40% is under 25yrs. • Unlike much of Sydney, our demographic is growing in children and young people and decreasing in seniors. • Strong Youth focus, Narellan Library Building also houses Youth Café. • Youth Services librarian buys for 12-24.
What is in the collection? Graphic Novels • Items released as Graphic novels and • Comic collections released trade paperback
Fiction • Predominantly fiction. • Styles include Manga, Manhwa, superheroes, classics, realism.
Collection Development Policy • No separate policy • Part of Young Adult CDP – selection criteria applied in the same way as other formats. • Forms and content of the collections must acknowledge the varying level of users, their abilities and cultural background. • Contribute to the intellectual, emotional, psychological, and social development of young people. • Provide for young people’s informational, educational and recreational needs. • Reflects popular culture and demand.
Only disparity between collection and CDP is • “The Collection provides materials on contemporary concerns and interests to youth culture with a large emphasis on Australian materials and content.” • Collection primarily American, Japanese, some British, Korean. • Very few graphic novels published by Australians.
Oops! • Complaints in regards to content. • “comics are for kids” • libraries are barometers of social standards. • Response • “Young Adults” refer to 12-24 • Graphic novels serve the needs of the DIVERSE needs of the community
