European R&D co-operation in 1985 EC The European Communities (The European Coal and Steel Comunity (ECSC), the European Economic Cummunity (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC - Euratom) • COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) since 1971 • First Framework Programme (1984-1988; budget: 3,750 B€) • EUREKA (17 July 1985; Inter-Governmental cooperation; ES, ESVO, Turkey, Commision ES) COMECON The Council for Mutual Economic Assistance /Совет экономической взаимопомощи- СЭВ/ • The Comprehensive Programme for Scientific and Technological Progress up to the Year 2000 (adopted in December 1985) • The Programme has boosted cooperation in science and technology • The Programme set forth 93 projects and 800 subprojects within 5 broad areas of research and development
Technologies in 1985 Technologies and office automation • Telefax devices just started their market life • Mobile phones didn´t exist and neighter did the internet • PC operated with 5.25 inch floppy disk and with hard disks of about 10/20 Megabites • Ordinary operating system for PCs was MS-DOS • PC sreens were black-white • Laser printers were just about introduced on market as high class product and very expensive • Software applications for accounting, warehouse, etc. were only tailor made and different for each hardware producer

EUREKA milestones • 1985 • 17 July 1985 • EUREKA established at the session leaded by President Miterrand held in Paris • 18 members: 17 countries and the Commission of the EuropeanCommunities • 5-6 November 1985 Hanover meeting leaded by Cancellour Kohl Declaration of the Principles relating to EUREKA (Hanover Declaration) 19 members The first 10 EUREKA projects announced
EUREKA milestones • 1986 • EUREKA Secretariat created in Brussels as a small and flexible body or tasks force • to collect and disseminate information, thus offering the services of a clearing house • to assist enterprises and institues in establishing contacts with partners for EUREKA projects • to give support to meetings of the Conference of Ministers and of the High Representatives • to provide for continuity in the tasks to be performed
