Introduction to EngineeringTeam Design Project Agenda Team project description Introduction to design process. Brainstorming
Team Project Description • Problem : • Design and build a sorter system for 3 types of recyclable objects. • Requirements and Constraints: • Must use materials provided. • Sort 30 objects ( 10 of each type randomly fed to the system into 3 bins) within 2 minutes. • Count objects going into one bin. • Detailed information on all parts of the team project is included in the Design Project Handbook, located at the end of your course materials.
Documenting the Design Process • Detailed written report and short oral report required. • Report documents each step of the design process. • Outline will be provided. • Person reading your report should be able to: • Understand how & why the final design was chosen. • Build your prototype from the information in the report. • A Project Notebook will be kept for all Project materials • Team Meetings • Sketches, Drawings, Notes, Calculations, References • One notebook, written report, and oral report per team.
How Project Will Be Graded • Team grades calculated • Individual grade will be team grade, perhaps modified by the extent of individuals contribution to the team.
Design Process • Statement of the problem. • Requirements and constraints. • Preliminary concepts (brainstorming). • Analysis. • Select final design and refine it. • Build prototype. • Test prototype. • Modify prototype. • Final test.
Problem Statement • Design and build, with proper documentation, a device for sorting recyclable materials into bins – namely • Paper Cups • Wooden Blocks • Steel Cylinders • Count the objects falling into one bin.
Some Requirements and Constraints • System must be built using only the materials provided • System must be finished in time for the preliminary competition.
Brainstorming – • Proposing New Ideas • Free Flowing Exchange of Ideas • No Judgment • No Decisions • Build on Others’ Ideas • Silly is Good – Can trigger creativeness • A Recorder(s) is(are) needed
