IDEA & AREA OF STUDY • To develop interactive narrative for kids. • Inspired by my nieces & nephew who only watches shows like Barneys, Teletubbies & Sesame Street.
IDEA & AREA OF STUDY • The interactive narrative will be based on traditional Indonesian Folklore. • Tangkuban Perahu - Mount Tangkuban • Candi Prambanan - Prambanan Temple • I La Galigo
IDEA & AREA OF STUDY IDEA #1 • Combine 2 folktales, Mountain Tangkuban Perahu & Prambanan Temple and have it intertwine in the middle with different result at the end.
IDEA & AREA OF STUDY IDEA #2 • Came to me a few days ago. Pick a section from I La Galigo epic, the longest story from Indonesia, and turn it into an interactive animation.
IDEA & AREA OF STUDY • Tangkuban Perahu - Mount TangkubanLocated in the Island of West Java. When seen from Bandung, Mt. Tangkuban Perahu has a distinctive shape, like an upside down boat. Tangkuban Perahu means, in fact, "up-turned boat" This peculiar shape has stimulated the fantasy of the Sundanese people from early times as expressed in the Legend of Sangkuriang.
IDEA & AREA OF STUDY • Candi Prambanan - Prambanan TempleLocated in Yogyakarta. There is a legend that Javanese people always tell about this temple. As the story tells, there was a man named Bandung Bondowoso who loved Roro Jonggrang. To refuse his love, Jonggrang asked Bondowoso to make her a temple with 1,000 statues only in one-night time. The request was nearly fulfilled when Jonggrang asked the villagers to pound rice and to set a fire in order to look like morning had broken. Feeling to be cheated, Bondowoso who only completed 999 statues cursed Jonggrang to be the thousandth statue.
IDEA & AREA OF STUDY • I La Galigo Epic story from Sulawesi. • Came to mind a few days ago. • The longest mythological story, about 6000 pages. The creation myth of the Bugis people of South Sulawesi island in Indonesia, I La Galigo (which takes its name from one of its protagonists). • Robert Wilson’s I La Galigo is the first known theatrical staging of an ancient epic poem of the Bugis people conveying the creation myth of South Sulawesi. It describes how the Gods of sky and se colonize middle earth. • Performed throughout the world in 2005.
ASSUMPTIONS • People might compare it to children’s TV shows, where the story evolve every episodes. • Sesame Street will launch Indonesian version in 2007. • The characters and stories arenot specific to the exploration ofIndonesian culture. • Stuffed puppet with Indonesian names, set in Indonesian town.
ASSUMPTIONS • Television & Computer Games vs. Books. • Will be a big debate for educators. • But since most kids know how to use computer, why not make their time more valuable by teaching them about the culture of Indonesia. • The point is to make them interested to discover Indonesia.
PRECEDENTS • “Table for Two” by Catherine Garnier. • Websites inspirations PBS Kids Discovery Kids Scholastic
