Material and Waste management Section number to go here
NDS Material and Waste • NDS are not a general waste contractor • NDS will take material or waste where there they can add value to Network Rail, either through re-use, recycling or by the economies of scale available to a national function. • NR Redundant Asset Policy and Standard
Material removal Agreement with EA MoU
Key limitations to reuse and recycling • Material damage during removal: • Contact NDS Lineside recover on ndslines@networkrail.co.uk as early as possible. NDS can advise on asset removal to maximise re-use potential. • Poor track waste segregation • Used or even new ballast contaminated with clay/soil/excavation waste – cannot be processed at depots. • Poor information on excavation waste • Excavation waste untested, NDS not notified of wagon contents.
Asbestos Section number to go here
Asbestos fibre contamination • December 2011 – trace asbestos fibres identified throughout used track ballast. • NDS and Institute of Occupational Medicine joint research • HSE agreement on threshold limits • Future process changes
Asbestos Containing Material • Receiving ACM from track is a continuing issue for NDS • ORR scrutiny • NR working group to establish robust risk assessments and processes for managing ACM in track. • NDS cannot segragate ACM from used ballast – all material will be landfilled.

Incidents • Promoting a wider definition of Environmental Incident • Spills • Ecology/Protected Species • Waste • Nuisance • Fire/Flood • Continue to encourage reporting via NDS24.7
