FACULTY GOVERNANCE SURVEY James Lollar, Radford University Consultant
Response Rates • N = 143 • CAS – 106 • COB - 10 • COE – 11 • Not given - 16 • Full: 42% Associate : 38% Assistant: 16%
General Findings • Survey confirmed the focus group data • Problems of current system – redundancy, too many committees, bad communication, not enough impact on decisions made • Wide agree /disagree on questions re: whether handled by college or university • People are discontented, and open to changing governance – but how?
Specific Questions • Since the UFC was introduced, has your level of awareness of faculty governance issues: • Increased 20% • Decreased 36% • Stayed the same 43% • Does CAS have too much influence? • 59% disagree
UFC composition • Would you support alternative representation on the UFC? • 25% yes • 26% no • 40% unsure (would depend on what)
University Faculty Senate? • Would you favor replacing the UFC with at UFS that includes a senator from each academic department? • Favor 54% • Not favor 20% • Unsure 20% • Why not? Would be too big, too unwieldy, small colleges would lose power
Chairs on UFC? • Would you support having the chairs as part of the UFC? • No one favored this
Overall • Support for a larger UFC • Colleges represented but not by department • More at large individuals • Proportional “Doesn’t matter how you structure it – just let administration do our job!”
