Process Logic Control • Laboratory to teach industrial control technology to future workers in manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and other high wage industries • Industrial Controls Systems Technology Course collaboration of: • Curriculum from Bellingham Technical College • Taught by Grays Harbor College • Lab Funded by WIRED • Hosted by RETC • Academic Year Enrollment of XXX Students

Forestry Program • Program to Manage 1700 Acres of Certified Forest on the Satsop Site combined with an educational program • Grays Harbor College Contributes Students and Instructor • WIRED Grant provided forestry tools • RETC facilitates classroom learning space and IT tools • Satsop Development Park Contributes Land • Over 40 Students currently enrolled in the program

  5. GBERT • Summer Youth Academy to promote green efficiency programs and serve as a pathway to a career in a trade • 21 Students completed the program including OSHA 10 Certificate • Collaborative Effort between RETC and four area school systems (Hoquiam, Aberdeen, Elma, and Montesanto)

  6. Try A Trade • RETC hosted the first try-a-trade event in May 2009 and will host a second in May 2010. • First Event attended by over 550 students from 16 different schools with participation from 48 different companies • Highlighted Green Elements of traditionally “dirty” jobs

Lean Manufacturing • 12 Course Seminar to teach Six-Sigma and efficiencies training primarily aimed at the manufacturing industry • Taught by world renown professor from the University of Washington School of Business • Guest Speakers from top companies and schools from around the globe • Students gain access to continuing education forum and online community • Marketing has just begun with substantial interest from local companies • Future offerings may expand industry focus to healthcare or other areas where lean principles apply

LEED Associate Training • LEED Associate Certificate is the gateway to advanced learning and certification in sustainable building • Requires students to read material before the seminar, and after completion to sit for an exam • First Pilot course being offered on December 5, 2009 targeting current trade apprentices • If successful will expand course offering to both represented trades and others in the industry

RETC Vision as a Legacy Entity • The Vision of the RETC is to create a sustainable, nimble and innovative center of learning that creates synergies with regional education, industry, and workforce partners to drive the transformation and development of a highly trained and effective workforce in the Pacific Mountain Region • 501(c)(3) Corporation formed and Board Appointed • Strong Board with representation from business, trades, education, and the community. • Executive Director to develop continuity/business plan • Support for an RETC Strong in the Region from diverse actors that see the need for a community and regional resource to advance workforce development

Green is Sustainable Fiscal Sustainability: All parties contribute to training and all share in the benefits Social Sustainability: Focus on training a workforce to earn a family wage not a minimum wage Environmental Sustainability: Transforming the region from a source of resource exploitation to one of environmental innovation

Assets of the RETC • Satsop Facility • Able to Host Small and Large Scale Events • Centrally Located in the Region • Unique Environment for Hands on Training • High-Tech Adaptable Classrooms and Laboratories • Online Learning Laboratory • Deploying State of the Art LMS • Accessible to all Partners and Clients • Content Development Laboratory • Nimble and On-Demand Learning • Capital Equipment • Host Site for Shared Equipment Saving Costs and increasing access for Training Partners • Mobile Training Systems for use by multiple providers • Works in synergy with Satsop Site and Online System

Funding Barriers • WIRED Funding Expires on June 30, 2010 • Current Economic Crisis Limits Funding Availability from Partners • Colleges are Overenrolled • Private Enterprise struggling to maintain the bottom line • Unemployment at near record highs • Trade Educational Trusts suffering funding setbacks • Need to create a draw to the RETC as a place for workforce training

Capital Equipment Investment • Concept of a Sustainable RETC as a legacy from the WIRED Grant; final year should have both immediate impact and sustainable implications • Construction Equipment Proposals: • Forklift, Man-lift, Backhoe, Boom Truck • Documented need from DOSH, Laborers, Operational Engineers, Electrical Workers, and Skill Centers • Identified immediate needs as well post-WIRED impact for training • Crane Procurement: Potential to house a donated crane to be used to train workers and comply with 2010 State Certification Requirements • Documented need from Operating Engineers Trade Trust as well as private industry • Immediate need to comply with regulations in effect on 1/1/2010 and to help clear the emerging backlog • Grant regulatory structures create barriers to approval of these programs; capital investment will extend and magnify the impact of the WIRED grant funds
