Runway Excursion • ICAO ADREP indicates: • the highest single occurrence category of all accidents over the last 10 years • 367 accidents and 140 serious incidents • Percentage of RE accidents has been increasing, with 20- year average being 21.4%, last 5- year average being 24.1%, and 2009 alone being 24.5%

  10. Runway Excursion • Runway friction measuring and reporting • Annex 14 provisions • ICAO friction task force (FTF) • Circular on runway surface condition assessment • Runway surface contamination removal

  12. Runway Incursion • ADREP shows: • 25 accidents and 98 serious incidents in the past ten years • No significant decrease in the number of reported occurrences • The average total annual number of occurrences reported to ADREP over the last 5 years is 26.4

  13. Runway Incursion • ICAO RI toolkit and Manual on prevention of RI • New provisions in Annex 14, Volume I: • Enhanced taxiway centre line markings • Enhanced mandatory instruction signs

Runway Incursion • ATM Procedures related to RI • Aircraft shall not taxi onto manoeuvring area without clearance - Annex 2 • Aircraft shall stop and hold at all runway holding points – Annex 2 • Movement of personnel and vehicles must be controlled by control tower - Annex 11 • Read back of clearances – Annex 11

  15. Runway Incursion • Use of surface movement radar • Standardized controller-pilot-driver communications • FAA has recently adopted the use of “line up and wait” to harmonize with ICAO phraseology • Classification and reporting of RI • Future work on technological solutions to RI
