  3. Widespread Colonization • By 1775, Britain controlled 32 colonies in North America • Spread from Canada to the Caribbean • Wide Range of Demographics • Ethnicity • Religion • Language • Customs

  4. Colonial Regions – New England • Largely English • Predominantly Congregationalist • Descended from Puritans • Economy based on small farms, trade, and fishing

  5. Colonial Regions – Middle Colonies • Mixed population • English, Dutch, Germans, African, Scots-Irish • New York originally Dutch • Delaware originally Swedish • Mixed religious denominations • Anglicans, Quakers, Presbyterians, Calvinists • Economy based on trade, farming, and small workshops

  6. Regions – Southern Colonies • Largely English and African • Influx of Scots-Irish • Predominantly Anglican • Influx of Methodists and Baptists • Economy based on plantation style agriculture

Mapping the 13 Colonies • Label each of the Thirteen Colonies • Indicate the year each colony was founded • Label the major cities: • Boston New York City Charles Town, SC • Philadelphia Jamestown • Color-code the map • One color – the New England Colonies • One color – The Middle Colonies • One color – The Southern Colonies
