  7. Why One Health? • Emerging and re-emerging zoonoses • Rapid worldwide spread • Serious threats to public health and economic stability • Early identification of pathogens and rapid response to outbreaks needed • Comprehensive disease detection and response capacities needed

How do you “do/make” One Health (in academia)? • Identify and/or understand the knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors that are necessary for collaboration • These are known as the One Health Core Competencies (OHCCs) • Map your curricula for these OHCCs • Embed these OHCCs into various training platforms • Curricula (for students) • In Service Training

The One Health modules design is flexible and adaptable MANY OPTIONS/CHOICES: • May choose to teach the core competencies as standalone modules • May choose to combine elements of modules • May choose to teach specific sessions • May choose modules to create a new unit in existing course or create “short course” • May choose to localize content and change context • May tailor to audience of learners

Challenges for One Health • Institutional challenges: acceptance, policy engagement • Capacity building: One Health Workforce • Incentives: how to share credits, added values of One Health. • Deeper coordination between sectors on human and animals health and the environmental agencies. • Improving the translation of evidence and research into policy.
