Collection of nasal lavage fluids (NALF) Analysis: cellular and humoral parameters (e.g. IL-8, IL-1b, TNF-a, IL-6, NO, albumin)
Neutrophils in NALF [%] – pre-/post-shift-comparison in the three exposure groups 60 55 50 45 p=0.023 p=0.010 40 Neutrophils in NALF [%] 35 p=0.020 p=0.0002 30 25 20 15 pre-shift post-shift reference group low exposure group high exposure group
IL-8-determination in NALF [%] – pre-/post-shift-comparison in the three exposure groups 350 300 250 200 n.s. IL-8-concentration in NALF [pg/ml] n.s. 150 100 50 0 pre-shift post-shift reference group low exposure group high exposure group
Conclusion NALF • Small increase of neutrophils after high airborne bitumen exposure during shift in nasal lavage • Although no direct comparison was made, irritative effects can possibly be differentiated from allergic effects
