IMAGINE A World Of Learning Through EXPERIENCECADETCenter for the Application of Drama to Education & Technology • Step into the 21st Century “We retain 10% of what we read and retain 80% of what we experience.” Source: Our Best Advice: Grant, Johnson, & Richardson; Crystal Spring Books, 1996. Exploring New Dimensions in Learning with Drama & Interactive Technology
CADET • To use new technology and drama as a means of impacting on the ethical, moral and social development of its audience • To explore new technology as an artistic medium for drama, storytelling and education • To pioneer archetypal models to use new technology and drama as a learning tool
SAMPLE PROJECTUSING THE NEWINTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGY:MY SISTER IS GOING TO BE A MOTHER • TOPIC:TEEN PREGNANCY • CONCEPT:STUDENT VIEWERS MAKE CHOICES A TEEN MOTHER MUST MAKE ON A DAILY BASIS TO LEARN RESPONSIBILITY
Project on TEEN PREGNANCY:MY SISTER IS GOING TO BE A MOTHER • Project will focus on examining the responsibility a teen parent will have once the baby is here. • Project will not focus on “how a baby gets started”.
How Interactive Methods Will Affect Drama & Storytelling:MY SISTER IS GOING TO BE A MOTHER • Goal: To affect the teen pregnancy rate by teaching 7-12 year olds ethics and responsibility • Concept: Use interactive drama and game theory to ask students to make daily choices a teen mother would face • Tool: A proper choice will give the student points and move them on to the next segment. A faulty choice will show them the result of that choice and then bring them back to the original dilemma to choose again.
Segment One:BABY’S FIRST DAYSDilemma: Personal Time Lesson: Patience • In this segment, the teenage mother, Marla, has her first week at home with the baby. • With the newness of the baby wearing off, she attempts to find personal time. • CHOICES: • Bored, she decides to play a video game, but the baby’s crying interrupts • She plays music and dances but the noise wakes the baby • She tries to feed the baby, but the baby is fussy and not cooperating • She tries to take a nap but the baby is fussy and won’t sleep • POINTS: • Each time the student anticipates the baby’s needs and puts the baby first, they’ll get points • Finding ways to be positive in quieting the baby earns points • Choices will include playing music with head phones, pre-paring the baby’s food, etc.,
SEGMENT TWO:IT’S MY PARTYDilemma: Babysitting Lesson: Reasoning • Marla’s CHOICES include: • Staying home with the baby • Finding a reliable sitter • Leaving the baby with a questionable sitter • Taking the baby to the party • Leaving the baby asleep in the apartment and going to the party • POINTS • Either “staying home” or “finding a reliable sitter” will get the student points and move them on to the next segment • All other choices will dramatically play out and return student to choose again • Leaving baby alone and asleep ends game • In this segment, the teen mother, Marla, receives a call from a close friend. The friend tells her that “the hottest party of the year is happening that night and Marla has to attend.” • The friend also says, “Bring the baby. We’ll all help watch.”
A regular problem for parents is trying to get out of the house to work or an appointment when the baby won’t stop crying. In this segment, Marla must get to a doctor appointment for both her and the baby. If she misses the bus, she will miss the appointment and lose her welfare. CHOICES Finding a way to quiet the baby, including: changing the diaper; giving some juice; using the pacifier; rocking and singing to the baby; taking the baby’s temperature; using some teething medicine; yelling at the baby; physically abusing the baby The student also must help Marla: get bathed and dressed; put the baby bag together with diapers, clothes, etc. Call a friend, mentor or parent for help The student must help Marla cope with a neighbor who keeps complaining about the baby’s crying as well as telephone solicitors. There will be positive and negative choices in how to handle these people POINTS Each time the student positively deals with the baby and still accomplishes tasks, they will get points Any negative choices towards the baby will take away points Negative choices to the phone calls will take away points If the student fails to quiet the baby or get out of the house on time, they will have to do the segment over. Segment Four:GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE ON TIMEDilemma: Baby won’t stop crying Lesson: Patience

The Coming Explosion in Drama & Storytelling • By 2006, all television broadcasting must be done digitally • Most of this will be in high definition television • A person’s phone, computer and television will be interconnected
New Ways Technology Will Affect Entertainment • Audiences will: • pick the camera placement for the show • chose which character to follow • be engaged live via telephone or computer • Become actively involved rather than be passive observers • Watch the show in several sittings, as if reading a book • Face decision making opportunities throughout the show
CADET HISTORY & PAST PRODUCTIONS • CADET started as an outgrowth of work by Terence and Lorena McDonald • CADET's live theatre events in symposium drama involved producing a central theatre piece that inherently had the themes and issues that needed to be explored • CADET believes that the new technology will allow them to bring both excellent drama and provocative thought and discussion to an even greater audience
