15 things to know about the periodic table 1. Element Name: Found in the box, spelled out 2. Element Symbol: Found in the box
Atomic #: Found at the top of the box. Tells you the # of protons. Always the smallest number in the box. Is always a whole number. Atomic mass #: Found in the box. Always the largest number in the box. Usually as a decimal.
5. # of protons: (+) You find this number based off of the atomic number. # of electrons: ( - ) # of protons = # of electrons 7. # of neutrons: ( o ) Atomic Mass # - Atomic #
Group #: At the top of the box. These run vertical ( 1-18 ) Period #: At the Left hand side of the box. These run horizontal ( 1- 7 )
# of electrons in outer shell: Look at the group #. # of shells: Look at the period #. (K,L,M,N….) K shell….holds up to 2 electrons L shell…. Holds up to 8 electrons M shell…..holds up to 8 electrons N shell…..holds up to 8 electrons etc….
State of the Element: Is it a solid, liquid, or or gas in its natural state. Written in black….solid Written in blue…...liquid Written in red……..gas
How many (+) charges: Number of protons tells you this. How many (-) charges: Number of electrons tells you this.
Metal, Nonmetal, or Metalloid: Is it on the the left side of the periodic table ( metal ), is it on the right side of the periodic table ( non metal ), does it lie on the zigzag line ( metalloid) Now you can draw a Bohr Model of the Element!!
