  10. Activity: How to inspire creativity? • Spend 2 minutes thinking about your answer (write it down) • Turn to one person next to you and discuss what you came up with • We will then share ideas with the class

  11. How to Inspire Creativity? • Immerse yourself in the world for which you're designing • Generate ideas constantly • Keep a book, you never know when you're going to be inspired • Sketch your vague ideas to think through them more clearly

How to Inspire Creativity? • Explain your ideas to others regularly • Feedback from others can inspire new ideas • But make sure you don't get stifled by it • Take an outsider's perspective on something you know • Take an insider's perspective on something you don't know • Take risks! • Early in the design process, it won't hurt

  13. Think of the Children • Children are creative because they don't know the rules, and thus break them all the time • Children don't know the consequences, and thus are more likely to take risks

  14. Other Ideas • Take things from one domain and try them in another • Talk with other creative people • Leave your comfort zone • Be passionate about the topic • Consider posting sketches around your workspace for inspiration and feedback • Read science fiction

  19. Brainstorming • Working in groups is essential to design • Brainstorming can be fun and fruitful • Keep the results of your user research handy during the process • e.g., personas, scenarios, lists of design requirements

Summary • If you're stuck on coming up with ideas, there are lots of things you can do to inspire creativity • Brainstorming works best as a group without initial judgment • Filter ideas based on their strengths, weaknesses, feasibility, originality, and their ability to meet your users’ needs

  25. Jeena’s Questions • The boss is often used to directing and managing workers. How can we break the traditional office hierarchy and method of operation when we need to generate ideas? • it's important to include the client's wishes when designing a product, but when they want to cut corners on safety to save money, is it the designer's moral obligation to say no? • According to Blanco, drawings and written descriptions don't transmit information in the same way as oral descriptions and lose their meaning over time, so when designers can't remember why they chose to do something, old notes might not help and they might have to reinvent a solution they had thought of before. How can we improve our process to ameliorate this issue?

  26. Jeena’s Questions • One problem people have when using stories and personas is that they don't invite, suggest, or question, but tell, show, explain, and try to convince. Can creating an ad-lib situation of a story help encourage suggestion and questioning? • Buxton says sketch appearance can invite suggestions and criticism or impart a finished design. How could you create a sketch that employs the imagination of the viewer? • When talking about Orange Juicers, Buxton describes the experience of an object being so important in design, but difficult to impart in sketches. What are some ways we can show how an object should feel through a sketch?

P2 – Ideation & Sketching • Due next Wedneday • As a team, conduct a brainstorming session where you generate at least 10 ideas per person (e.g., 30 total ideas for a 4 person team) • Feel free to go for more! More is better! • As a team, filter the ideas according to your users’ needs and pick the best three • Resketch these 3 ideas more neatly and provide a 1-2 paragraph written justification for why they're the best • Class time today will be given for this
