2012 Operating Expenses • $ 4,741 total for scholarships (2012) • Includes $2,000 annual allowance and $2,741 from DeMark Endowed Scholarship • $ 1,000 for Chapter Operating Budget • Food and drink for monthly meeting ($120 per meeting) • $ 3,350 support for repair of critical equipment
Equipment Repair Funds • $ 3350 for fixing Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) in Hedden’s Lab ELSD
Equipment Repair Funds • The only public GPC facility at Texas Tech • Hedden’s group maintains the facility • All three detectors (RI, ELSD, UV) broke down at the same time in spring 2012 • Funds from SPE matched with Dean’s Office funds and Hedden’s grant funds • SPE contribution was critical (thank you!)
Equipment Repair Impact • Equipment has been used for Polymers Lab class in Spring 2013 for both graduate and undergraduate students • First time GPC methods were taught at TTU • Hedden, McKenna, Green, and Simon groups benefitted from the repair so far • Three manuscripts in preparation with ESLD data
Plastics Education at TTU • Polymer Processing: ChE 4340/5340 (Hedden) Structure, processing, and properties for industrial plastics processing operations, including extrusion, mixing, calendering, blow molding, thermoforming, fiber spinning, compression molding, injection molding, and recycling. • Polymers and Materials Lab: ChE 4344/5344 (Hedden/Simon) Synthesis and properties of materials including polymers, polymerization, transitions, phase separation, mechanical properties and processing. • Polymer Viscoelasticity: ChE 4346 (McKenna) Linear viscoelasticity, Boltzmann superposition, experimental methods, molecular theory, and mechanical properties of solid polymers. • Polymer Physics and Engineering: ChE 4342 (McKenna) Fundamentals of polymer science and engineering. Solution properties, chain conformation and molecular mass characterization. Rubber elasticity and vicoelastic behavior. Crystalline polymers and morphology.
Future Directions Goals for the year 2013 Recruit more undergraduate students Invite at least two plastics industry speakers Hold 2nd SPE-TTU Poster Competition Increase communication with other SPE chapters Continued participation in Polyolefins conference
