Cooperating Institutions US FWS, Wyoming Game and Fish, AZA, University of WY, WY Natural Diversity Database, Laramie Rivers Conservation District, Private Land Owners • Program Opportunities: • Summer toad population surveys in the Laramie Basin • Chytrid monitoring of local amphibian populations • Assisting in husbandry and captive breeding of toads at the Redbuttes facility in Laramie • Participating in tadpole releases in the Laramie Basin Wyoming Toad (Bufo baxteri) Species Survival Program Swabbing a toad for chytrid monitoring during a survey Release of captive bred tadpoles at the Buford Safe Harbor Property History: 1950’s-Considered one of the most plentiful species in the Laramie Basin of Albany County, Wyoming 1970’s-Widespread aerial spraying of fenthion for mosquito control and rapid toad declines observed 1984-Federally listed as an endangered species 1989-Remaining toads were brought into captivity and it was declared extinct in the wild 1993-The last known locale for wild toads, Mortenson Lake, was made into a National Wildlife Refuge by the Nature Conservancy 1994-cpative breeding program initiated 1996-SSP was approved by AZA Participating AZA Zoos: Central Park Zoo Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Como Zoo Detroit Zoo Kansas City Zoo Memphis Zoo Museum of Science Mississippi River Museum Henry Doorly Zoo Toledo Zoo Zoo Montana US FWS Facilities: Redbuttes Environmental, Laramie, WY Saratoga National Fish Hatchery, Saratoga, WY Wyoming toads in amplexus at the Henry Doorly Zoo Strings of captive produced toad eggs at the Redbuttes facility Wild toad outfitted with a backpack containing a radio transmitter • Today: • 550 toads in captivity at 11 institutions • More than 100,000 tadpoles and toadlets released to the wild since 1995 • Proceeds from your donation will go to support field work and other important SSP activities • For more information contact: • Bruce Foster, SSP coordinator • bfoster@wcs.org • Val Hornyak, SSP Vice-coordinator • val.hornyak@toledozoo.org • Sarah Armstrong, studbook keeper • kippsara@yahoo.com
