Well first • We found out touch screens don't detect heat, they detect either force, electric current, or acoustic waves.
The Resistive System • The resistive system works by creating a electrical current in two conductive layers and when these touch they create a short out causing a drop in electrical current allowing the operating system mark where the screen was touched.
Whats it made of? • The resistive system is made of a flexible plastic screen, a conductive film (Normally Indium Tin Oxide(ITO)) a air gap created by nonconductive spacers (Made from materials such as rubber) and a sheet opposite the screen made from a film of ITO and glass as a insulater
What is ITO and Why is it a main component in Resistive System touch screens? • ITO is a transparent conductor that allows for touchscreen devices to be a viewable screen. • ITO is created when approximately 90% Indium Oxide (In2O3) and 10% Tin Oxide (SnO2) are combined (by weight) • In powder form ITO is yellow-green in color, but in a thin film it becomes transparent and usable for touch screens.
The Capacitive System • The capacitive system works by having a layer storing a electrical charge on a glass panel that works as the monitor. The operating system detects where the screen is touched by detecting where there was a drop of electricity on the screen as some of the charge is conducted my a finger touching the screen
Well how is the electrical drops position on the charged layer calculated? • Well the drop of charge on the charged layer of a Capacitive system touchscreen is measured in the drop of electricity in circuits in each corner of the screen, then by calculating a ratio of the drops from each corner it can accurately find the coordinates of where the screen was touched.
What materials go into a Capacitive System touch screen • For the most part the Capacitive System layout is the same as the Resistive system except for 1 major part • This part is the actual screen that your finger comes in contact with is glass, not allowing it to bend or flex.
