Milgram’s Obedience Study Creating a “fake “ experiment to examine human behavior
Why? • After WWII, there were many historians who said that an event such as the Holocaust could only really happen in Germany • They speculated that German people were unique in that they tended to follow orders more than most people would
A FAKE EXPERIMENT • People told that they were doing a test on memory. • Goal was to see if punishing someone with a shock would encourage better attention and learning. • People were paid a small sum to participate. They got the sum at the start of the experiment and could leave any time.
A FAKE EXPERIMENT • Three roles: • Teacher ( on screen): reading questions and giving shocks if answer was wrong • Learner (off screen) answering questions and getting shocks* • Scientist (off screen) the “authority” making sure directions were followed* • * learner is not really being shocked. He is an actor who is “in” on the trick. So is the scientist
RESULTS • 65% GAVE THE FULL SHOCK • VARIATIONS: • IN LESS ACADEMIC SETTING…48% • INSTRUCTIONS ON PHONE… 21% • VIEWING ARGUMENT BETWEEN SCIENTISTS ABOUT WHETHER TO CONTINUE….10% • LEARNER IN SAME ROOM…40% • WHEN TEACHER HAD TO PUT LEARNER’S HAND ON THE SHOCK PLATE…30% • WHEN THEY ONLY HAD TO GIVE THE ORDER TO SOMEONE ELSE TO SHOCK THE LEARNER…..92% • GENDER DID NOT MATTER.
