  7. The Why - - Our Game Plan • Who are we? How do we achieve greater goals? What do our students leave with, and what is our purpose? • Most importantly - -What is success? • We knew we needed a common bond, a way to bring us all together. No more fragmentation! • Lets control the controllable, and let winning take care of itself. • John Wooden was the master Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction, knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming” – John Wooden

  8. ‘The Discoverer Way’ • The Pyramid of Success - - The Compass of Success • Our plan to control what we can control • The foundation of our success - - built on character and leadership skills for our student athletes • We chose eight behaviors for our students and defined each…

  9. Commitment • Definition:the dedication to the Discoverer Way, obligation to everything that it entails, promise to keep its principles, and the duty of one’s self to uphold the Discoverer Way in mind, body, and spirit “There are only two options regarding commitment, you’re either in or you’re out. There’s no such thing as life in between.” – Anonymous

  10. Honesty • Definition:always being truthful, genuine, and sincere with yourself, teammates, and coaches; honest communication is a must, not an option “Honesty is the cornerstone of all success, without which, confidence and ability to perform shall cease to exist.” – Mary Kay Ash

  11. Discipline • Definition:coming to work each and every day with the effort needed to fully prepare yourself mentally, physically, and spiritually for game day; be coachable and persevere, even when it is difficult “Discipline is: knowing what to do, knowing when to do it, doing it to the best of your abilities, doing it that way every single time.” – Bob Knight

  12. Confidence • Definition:tenaciously facing your fears and doubts, being poised under pressure, trusting yourself, and having faith in your training, teammates, and coaches to see you through “The biggest mistake an athlete can make is to be afraid to make one.” – L. Ron Hubbard

  13. Integrity • Definition:possessing character on and off the field; having the strength and courage to stand up for what is right, even when it is unpopular; having integrity brings honor to yourself, your family, and school “To believe in something and not live it is dishonest.” – Ghandi “There is a choice you have to make, in everything you do and you must always keep in mind the choice you make, makes you.” - Anonymous

Enthusiasm • Definition: bringing more energy than your opponent, having the heart to meet each challenge with your very best, and playing with a can-do spirit despite setbacks; our identity is scrappy “Every person is enthusiastic at times. 16. Loyalty • Definition:appreciating, supporting, and giving your allegiance to your teammates, coaches, and school, always remaining steadfast in these loyalties even when times are tough “Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice.” – Woodrow Wilson

  17. The Pieces of the Puzzle • Success is not attainable without the pieces of the puzzle fitting together • We each have a role and where we fit • From the Boys Town method - - we defined the role of each individual in our programs • At the end of each day we need to do the ‘mirror test’ • Accountability / Modeled Behaviors are integral to our success. Be the Rock!

  18. Are We There Yet!? • Changing a culture doesn’t take days or weeks, it takes years . • Culture requires constant, consistent and intentional effort. • There needs to be team effort, and leadership from within - - the team, class, coaching staff. • It is not about me - - it is about the greater purpose and the team.

  19. The Mirror Test / Challenge • Do I coach for success or purely winning/losing? • What are kids leaving ourprogram with? • What do myactions depict? • We are defined by action, not by word… • Are goals - - Specific – Measureable – Attainable – Realistic – Timely
