Personal Development Fund: Background • Choice and Opportunity 2003 • BMA Survey • New 2008 SAS Contract Negotiation • Fund Allocation - £ 12 million recurrent Fund • Distributed through the Deanery and SHA to the Trust • On per capita basis for Staff Grades, Associate Specialists and Specialty Doctors • All Trusts to have a Trust SAS Tutor • Role of Trust Tutors • Different from Study Leave

  9. Spending Plan • Panel meeting after allocation of Fund by the Deanery • Agreement on Provisional spending plan • Admin expenses included • Generic courses and Individual applications • Any revision communicated and agreed via email

  11. Selection Criteria: Individual applications • Courses, Secondments & Top-ups for CESR (Article 14 route) • Learning new skills, Postgraduate qualifications, Diplomas, etc • Any other personal development which cannot be covered by study leave.

  12. Spl Points: Selection criteria • No limit to number of successful individual applications • Money distributed among successful candidates • Any shortfall to be borne by the applicant • Departments concerned compensated for the absence

Future Plan • Recurrent Funding • More in-house courses • Saving could be used towards more individual applications • Two rounds of applications • Evaluations from individual applicants • Follow up of the gains from attending courses • Introduce a voluntary record of Independent Assessment • Discuss leave and payment for cover

Outcome • A very useful and successful initiative • Increased utilisation of fund from 68% to 100% • All Courses have been well attended; 14 - 18/ course • no. of individual applicants have increased 3 fold over the last 3 years • One successful CESR application and quite a few awaiting PMETB/GMC decision • Aspirations have been met to become a Consultant • ↑ awareness of the fund with ↑ participation year on year
