~ Draft Estimate ~State Radon-related Lung Cancer Deaths • These are unofficial preliminary draft estimates, and modest changes are likely as EPA refines the data and methodology. These estimates will be updated periodically. • These estimates were derived using a methodology similar to that used in EPA’s 2003 risk assessment (www.epa.gov/radon/risk_assessment.html). • The data, methodology and other factors used in calculating the state estimates will be included in a short paper being prepared now. • These estimates are intended to put the state specific risks in context to the national risk estimate (i.e., the 21,100 annual radon-related lung cancer deaths). States should also consider how to use these estimates strategically in their SIRG program and related risk reducing activities. • Remember, the SIRG program has three general criteria for making State grant award decisions: (1) degree of risk; (2) funding/match; and (3) measurable results/performance. 1-5 Draft Sep-07
Estimate of State Radon-related Lung Cancer Deaths • 21,385 • {Total of EPA State Risk Estimates, Sep 2007, Draft} • 21,100 • {National EPA Risk Assessment, 2003} • Factors/data needed for the calculation: • (1) Estimated average radon level for Zone 1, 2 & 3 • (2) Estimated average radon level for each State • {QA’d comparing LBNL High Radon Project to EPA NRRS} • (3) State Lung Cancer Death Rates {U.S. - Radon 13.5%} • (4) Population by Zone and State 2-5 Draft Sep-07
Estimate of State Radon-related Lung Cancer Deaths For each State(S) : Where: RD = Lung cancer deaths due to radon exposure in homes RL = Average Radon Level LCR = Lung cancer rate (per 100,000 persons) P = Population 0.135 = Percent lung cancer attributable to radon exposure (13.5%) 3-5 Draft Sep-07
