Using Arts-Based Learning to Help Students Learn Graphs Katherine M. Sauer Metropolitan State University of Denver dr.katherine.sauer@gmail.com SEA Annual Conference November 15th – 17th 2012 New Orleans, LA
For economists, graphs are useful and elegant tools for depicting information. For many students, graphs are just a bunch of lines that cross at random places.
An alternative approach: • Arts-Based Learning • the incorporation of artistic expression into pedagogies for learning other disciplines
It is becoming increasingly popular in • business schools • corporations • as a way to develop /foster skills for • communication • creative thinking • and leadership. Why? Nissley, N. (2010) Arts-based learning at work: Economic downturns, innovation upturns, and the eminent practicality of arts in business. Journal of Business Strategy 31(4): 8-20.
Studying the arts can help “businesspeople communicate more eloquently” “companies learn how to manage bright people” “business become more innovative” The art of management: Business has much to learn from the arts. The Economist. February 17, 2011. Print Edition.
Four main ways 1. Skills Transfer 2. Projective Techniques 3. Illustration of Essence 4. Making How? Taylor, S.S. & D. Ladkin (2009) Understanding arts-based methods in managerial development. Academy of Management Learning & Education 8(1): 55-69.
Using “Illustration of Essence” to help students learn graphs
Instructions to students in groups: You’ll be shown a series of slides containing artistic representations of graphs we’ve worked with this semester. Your task is to: Explain which elements of the artistic representation led you to your answer Identify the type of graph shown
Ways to use this approach: - in class (50 minutes) - homework - piecemeal
Extension: Students create their own artistic version of the graph they find the most challenging.
The Economics & Art Project • Digital slideshows of images of artistic works that relate to various economic concepts (e.g. money & banking, role of government, labor). • https://intra.krannert.purdue.edu/sites/econandart/ • Pages/Home.aspx • - developed by Michael Watts • - hosted online by Purdue University
