Red giant • A Red giant is a luminous giant star of low or intermediate mass in a late phase of stellar evolution. • In a star the shell surrounding the central core becomes hot enough to fuse protons into alpha. So the star gains a new source of energy then soon after the heat causes the star to get bigger and then turn into a red giant. • The sun will turn into a red giant in about four billions years.
