IS AUSTRALIAN DATA REALLY VALIDATING EGM08, OR IS EGM08 JUST IN/VALIDATING AUSTRALIAN DATA? Sten Claessens, Will Featherstone, Ira Anjasmara The Western Australian Centre for Geodesy & The Institute for Geoscience Research Curtin University of Technology 24 June 2008 GGEO2008 Conference, Chania, Greece
Introduction (1/1) • Part of the joint IGFS and IAG Inter-Commission Working Group 2 “Evaluation of Global Earth Gravity Models” • The tide-free releases of the PGM07A and EGM08 global geopotential models are compared to Australian data: • Land and marine gravity observations • The AUSGeoid98 regional gravimetric geoid model • Co-located GPS-levelling on the Australian Height Datum • Astrogeodetic deflections of the vertical • Objective: quality assessment of PGM07A and EGM08
Gravity data (1/2) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with land gravity observations EGM08 (mgal) PGM07A (mgal)
Gravity data (2/2) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with marine gravity observations EGM08 (mgal) PGM07A (mgal)
AUSGeoid98 (1/3) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with AUSGeoid98 (2'x2') EGM08 (m) PGM07A (m)
AUSGeoid98 (2/3) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with AUSGeoid98
AUSGeoid98 (3/3) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with AUSGeoid98
GPS-levelling data (1/7) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with GPS-levelling data EGM08 (m) PGM07A (m)
GPS-levelling data (2/7) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with GPS-levelling data bias & tilt not removed bias & tilt removed units: m 254 points 1013 points
GPS-levelling data (3/7) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with GPS-levelling data Southwest Seismic Zone EGM08 (m) bias & tilt removed PGM07A (m) bias & tilt removed
GPS-levelling data (4/7) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with GPS-levelling data South Australian Seismic Zone EGM08 (m) bias & tilt removed PGM07A (m) bias & tilt removed
GPS-levelling data (5/7) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with GPS-levelling data bias & tilt not removed bias & tilt removed units: m Southwest South Australia
GPS-levelling data (6/7) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with GPS-levelling data South Australian Seismic Zone EGM08 AUSGeoid98
GPS-levelling data (7/7) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with GPS-levelling data South Australian Seismic Zone EGM08 EGM96
Astrogeodetic deflections (1/3) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with E-W astrogeodetic deflections EGM08 (arcsec) PGM07A (arcsec)
Astrogeodetic deflections (2/3) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with N-S astrogeodetic deflections EGM08 (arcsec) PGM07A (arcsec)
Astrogeodetic deflections (3/3) EGM08 Comparison - Differences with astrogeodetic deflections E-W deflections N-S deflections units: arcseconds
Conclusions (1/1) • PGM07A and EGM08 fit all Australian data better than any other model previously tested • EGM08 slightly improves on PGM07A in the comparisons to GPS-levelling data • PGM07A and EGM08 confirm the already-known deficiencies in the Australian data (implicit validation) • True validation of PGM07A and EGM08 cannot be claimed • PGM07A and EGM08 are good models over Australia
