  2. Statistics from National Research Council & the National AcademiesRising Above the Gathering Storm • In 2009, 51% of United States patents were awarded to US companies. • The United States ranks 27th among developed nations in proportion of college students receiving undergraduate degrees in math, science, or engineering. • Only 15% of US graduate level math and science jobs are filled by United States graduates. • On the PISA exam for mathematical proficiency of 15 year-olds, the United States ranked 31st out of 65 countries tested, and when looking just at mathematics literacy among the top students, the US ranked 28th.

  3. Barrington 220 Elementary Curriculum Cycle Revised: December 2011

  5. Math Curriculum Implementation Fall 2012: PreK - 5th Grade Elementary Curriculum • Nat’l Research Council • Nat’l Math Panel • American Academy of Sciences • Nat’l Council of Teachers of Mathematics • Mid-Continent Research for Education & Learning • Institute for Educational Sciences (WWC) • American Institutes for Research • Organisation for Economic & Co-Operation & Development • American Mathematics Society • ISAT, MAP, Aimsweb, ACT (local) • MAP, NAEP (national) • TIMSSS, PISA (International) • Parent Survey (November 2010) • Teacher Survey/ Needs Assessment (October 2010) DATA RESEARCH STANDARDS • Common Core State Standards • 21st Century Skills

  6. Overview of the K-12 CCSS Math Standards Elementary Curriculum • Grade-Level Standards • K-8 grade-by-grade standards organized by domain and content • 9-12 high school standards organized by conceptual categories • Standards for Mathematical Practice • Describe mathematical “habits of mind” • Standards for mathematical proficiency: reasoning, problem-solving, modeling, decision-making, and engagement • Connect with content standards in each grade

  7. Focus on numeracy in the early grades Math Standards: Key Points Elementary Curriculum Mastery means multiple representations of understanding and ability to apply it to a novel situation Emphasis on solving real-world problems Move away from a mile-wide, inch deep curriculum to more depth and focus on topics.

  9. 3rdGRADE MATH: Amber didn’t know what 7 X 5 equals, but she knew 5 X 5 = 25 and 2 X 5 = 10. Use drawings, words, and/or equations to explain why Amber can add 25 and 10 to find what 7 X 5 equals. Current ISAT & Possible Future CCR/PARCC Questions Elementary Curriculum 6th GRADE MATH: What is the value of 3x + y + 3 – 3(x + y) when x = 18.22 and y = -1? Find a value for k and a value for n so that (x – 2)(x – 3) = x2+ kx + n. FUTURE FUTURE PARCC Item Development ITN

  12. What Can Parents Do? • Avoid conveying negative attitudes toward math. • Ask your child what he/she did in math class today? Ask for details and explanation. • Give your child meaningful problems that use numbers and shapes while you are going about everyday life. Ask you child to explain. • Expect your child’s homework to include more than simple computation worksheets.

  13. What Can Parents Do? • Expect some confusions as part of the learning process but emphasize that effort, not ability, is what matters. Math is understandable and can be figured out. • Have high expectations. • Be an advocate for math proficiency in our schools. • Support professional development for teachers and administrators.

  14. Thank you for your Partnership!
