Process Improvement • Discussion of process improvement tools - Ishikawa diagram, also known as cause and effect or fishbone diagrams - Plan Do Check Act cycle
Ishikawa Diagram • a visualization tool for categorizing the potential causes of a problem in order to identify its root causes. • Fishbone diagrams are typically worked right to left, with each large "bone" of the fish branching out to include smaller bones containing more detail
P-D-C-A Plan – Establish the processes necessary to meet desired outcome Do – Implement the plan, and collect data for analysis Check – Study the actual results and compare against expected results Act – Make any necessary adjustments to plan based on differences between actual and expected results

Process Improvement • Participants are to prepare both an Ishikawa diagram and a Plan Do Check Act cycle • Process Improvement plans are to be posted in common discussion area – feedback is to be provided to at least two other participants
Process Improvement • The case study instructional strategy is useful to present possible scenarios for process improvement • Discussion forums can be used to present process improvement tools to use to develop plans for improvement • Participants will interact with each other and the course leader in both the case study and discussion forums
