General features • Established by the decision of the 4th Pan-European Conference held in 1998 in Aarhus (Denmark); • Family of RECs : RECCEE, REC Moldova, REC Russia, REC Caucasus, CAREC; • Operational since 2001 • The regional organization of international character; • Staff – 42-50; • HQ in Almaty, Kz, • COs: Kz, Kg, Tj, Uz, Trm; • Annual Budget ̃̃ 2,2 mln Euro • Board of Directors - 13 members: national MoEs, NGOs, OSCE, Germany and science
Mission: to assist in addressing environmental problems in CA through the provision of: dialogue platforms for multi-state and - sectoral communication; know-how, knowledge and technology exchange; supporting of the development and application of innovative environmental policies, approaches and practices; promotion of public participation in environmental decision-making and; exchange of information in the region

Environmental Management: Projects • FLERMONECA (EU ): environmental monitoring component • SEIS (FOEN): Status of Environment Reporting in CA “Supporting Turkmenistan to establish State of Environment Reports using UN-ECE indicators” • Assessment of Assessment projects (Gov. Italy, Switzerland) • Support towards local initiatives for sustainable water resources management in Central Asia (Norway) • PES (FOEN, SWIS Re, UNEP) – economic incentives for saving ecosystems; • Networks support: DryNet international, Asia-Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) , Interdisciplinary WG on Early Warning System and Transboundary Monitoring of geo-risks related to climate change
Water Initiatives Support: Projects - Fostering transboundary cooperation on small watersheds in Central Asia (USAID); - Support towards local initiatives in the env. governance and WRM in CA (Norway); - AWARE comp. on return and reused waters (EU); - WMBOCA projects of the EURECA; Knowledge Instit. Community of Practice (WB); Improvement of WRM in Zhambul Obl., RK through introd. of effective WU system (UNDP/Coca-Colla); - Effective WU technologies in Aspara and Ugam Basins (through NGO partners)
