Unit 6. Emphasizing content words. What is contrast?. Things that are different Contrastive stress is used to emphasize important words. In each sentence or group of words, there is usually one important word that needs the most stress. The vowel in that word needs to be very clear.

  2. What is contrast? • Things that are different • Contrastive stress is used to emphasize important words. • In each sentence or group of words, there is usually one important word that needs the most stress. • The vowel in that word needs to be very clear.

  3. Focus rule 1 • The stress can be up or down, but it must change. • How do you spell easy?

  4. Music of English • Practice stressing the words in each sentence!

  7. What words are typically content words • Nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, question words • not: articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs

  8. Focus rule 2 • The focus word is usually a content (noun, verb, adj, adv, question word) word

  9. H,I • Listen and repeat • practice with a partner • with your same partner, share your answer to ‘I’ and practice saying the sentence with the stress.

  10. J • Listen to the dialogue and notice the bold stressed word

  11. Vowel Work • More: linking vowels with off-glides • With a group, put a small w or y to show the linking. • Practice reading with your group

  12. Dictation • We all want the best solution. • Why are you asking about me? • Tell me everything you know. • There’s no snow anywhere. • Please show us the photographs.
