Cheng, University of Akron, DMR 0516602 PMMA Good solvent for PS Cyclohexane Good solvent for PMMA PLLA PS 2-methoxyethanol Single crystals from crystalline-amorphous block copolymers provide a novel way to study different fields of polymer physics. One area that this grant has helped support research in is polymer brushes. We have studied the interaction of homopolymer brushes as well as the nanophase domains of diblock brushes. Triblock copolymers with a crystallizable block at one end were used to create a substrate with a PMMA-b-PS block at the surface (as seen in the figure to the right). By changing the solvent treatment, different morphologies were observed under AFM and confirmed with SERS. Results can be seen in Polymer (2007,48, 3732). Another area where these principles may be useful is in hybrid materials. It is possible to link crystallizable polymer chains to nanoparticles such as carbon-60, carbon-70, or polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). Self-assembly through the crystallization of the polymer chains can create 2-dimensionally ordered patterns of these nanoparticles on the crystal surface. These arrays can be used in various applications including optics and electronics.

Cheng, University of Akron, DMR 0516602 EDUCATION: This grant has helped 1 student, Dr. Huiming Xiong, earn his Ph.D. at the University of Akron. It has also supported 5 students in their doctoral dissertation research. They are Mr. Ryan Van Horn, Mr. Ming-Siao Hsiao (both 4th year students), Mr. Jing Wang, Mr. Wenbin Zhang (3rd year students), and Mr. Xinfei Yu (2nd year student). OUTREACH: At the University of Akron, we work to expose the surrounding community to polymers through various K-12 outreach programs. These include, but are not limited to, tours of the facilities and summer teaching programs. We have also participated in the NSF-REU summer internship program for the last 5 years. This allows undergraduates from different universities to gain valuable experience in graduate research. In 2006, Mr. Juan Morinelly, now a graduate of the Michigan Technological University, and Mr. Cane Alabakovski (Univ. of Akron) worked on areas of these projects. Currently, Mr. Nathan Miller, a student from Baldwin-Wallace College, is working in our group as an REU intern.
