  1. Broadcast or narrowcast? WHY DO YOU THINK THIS? Broadcast Because this channel got a broad of genres such as comedies, cooking, drama etc. Narrowcast Because these channel got one genres mainly like Comedies

  2. Type of programmes – and some examples… What could you say about the shows on the channel? Alibi- It look quite formal and dramatic, so I am guessing it is a crime/triller channels Food- Beside the word, the shape looked like a tomato and the colour usually attracts adult Home- As it said “Home”, it could be about house building or DIY. So this could attract general genders Blighty- The design has a union jack, a flag for England. Possibly, this is a channel as it based about England Really- Look like a comical and bright so could represent the bright channel shows all the positive shows Yesterday- It look too historial, and bit bland so I am guessing it is a channel for histories Watch- This logo represent watching something but mostly for adults or teen so maybe they show the movies or tv shows Dave- Look like it is for men. Black and White with posh lettering. Gold- The colour and the style of lettering look classic, old style so it is about Classic shows Eden- The green colour and the watery effect, represent the natue which could be a nature/animal watching channel

  3. Choose 3 channels – and define the target audience – using CARGEL – explaining WHY you think they are the target audience… Look at the programme listings to help you and think about the name of the channel 1. 2. 3. Dave- This channel attract men Mostly, because of their Program's choices such as Top Gear, Qi, Mock The Week All of these are aims to adult as the Language they spoken are high Standard English also the location of these are set in England. The class of these shows are top because the language and the style of the shows Really- This channel attract women. Mostly, because of their programmes choice such as Don’t tell the Bride, Hart of Dixies, Cheater. All of these shows aims to people who like the fact of reality and this is set on the worldwide so they have access to see the people’s live around the world. This can sometime attract thewomen as they like the method of gossips and clothing tastes. The class of these are very Working class so most of general audience watch it. Eden- This channel attract men. Mostly, because of their progammes choice are about nature, fishing or the wildlife of the animals. Their narrative style is very strong and high class as this can appeal high class also their location is worldwide so men can be interested into exploring the world Your 3 Channel’s NARROWCAST to A NICHE audience – try to explain what this means Narrowcast mean the channels is only aiming at one groups of audience, Niche mean one interest for one audience so these three channels are the narrowcast as they only aims for one group which niche

  4. Can you think of any other channels that narrowcast – to niche audiences What are the strengths and weaknesses of a ‘niche’ TV channel? Why do they show the same programmes day in day out? • The strength of niche:- • This can help one group of people to watch one thing • This can be accessable for people who do anything • so they don’t have to wait for one programmes too long • This can match people’s taste, instead of watching broadcast, • they can go to one channel where they can have mood for it This is because so they could show one interested audience the same also it can cover all of the TV schedule and leave a profit safe instead of showing everything then the audience will be confused what to watch. This is also to help the company to gain profit as not many people are not interested in different genres. BBC sport as it attract men and people who like sport Nick Junior as it attract young children Sky Comedy as it attract the audience who like the genre of Comedy

  5. To conclude - explain how these channels (DAVE, GOLD etc.) appeal to different ranges of audience than the films we have already looked at  - even though arguably they are all “mainstream”. How are they able to do this? (Cheaper, repeats, no production costs) These channels earn lots of money as they repeat the programmes so people can only watch one show instead of the broadcast channel to be showing various of TV shows; These channels will be saving lots of benefit as with the money they could own lots of channel to gain more profit than the broadcast channels Some of you should attempt to comment critically - i.e. is a ‘niche’ TV channel a good idea? Why & why not? I say ‘niche’ TV channel is a good idea as it is free, accessible for the aerial viewers and it can only aims at one audience Instead of showing various shows then they won’t be able to find their interest. This could help both communites As it can help one specially audience to watch one things that is suitable for them and it can help the company to gain Money and viewers rating which help the channels to be showing more shows

  6. THE CHANNELS SHOW THE SAME TYPE OF PROGRAMMES BECAUSE THEY ARE TRYING TO APPEAL TO A SMALL AUDIENCE THAT LIKES SPECIFIC PROGRAMMES – KNOWN AS A “NICHE” AUDIENCE. THEY ARE “NARROWCASTING” THE PROGRAMMES TO A NICHE AUDIENCE. DEFINITIONS: NICHE AUDIENCE When a TV show (or website or magazine or radio station) is aimed at a person’s individual interests - they are said to be a “niche” audience. It appeals to a niche or small or specialist audience. NARROWCAST To transmit programmes (especially by cable / satellite television) confined to the interests of a specific group of viewers, subscribers, or listeners, such as business people, or teenagers. This is the opposite to BROADCAST - e.g. Eastenders appeals to a wide audience (it has 80 year old and 16 year old characters, of different classes and different ethnic groups) of 8 million per episode - therefore it is “broad”cast. Appealing to a wide (broad) audience.
