With the Pacific Northwest and Portland in particular going through the hottest summer on record, people have been forgoing outdoor methods of exercise in favor of working out inside, where the temperature is controlled and the water readily available.Portland has had more ninety-degree days this summer than it ever has before, and the effects are noticeable. Fewer people are out jogging in the evenings, and more and more people are flocking to gyms and personal training studios such as The Art of Personal Training to get their workouts in. There is no doubt that air conditioning and fans are better than the sun and the heat, especially for cardiovascular workouts. Instead of turning into painful sweatfests that can’t be done, the comfortable air of gyms and studios keeps people happy and allows them to push themselves as hard as they can.
Additionally, the hot summer has caused a number of wildfires to crop up in eastern Oregon and Washington. This, coupled with some unfortunate winds, has caused the air quality in Portland to drop. It’s impossible to work out when the smoke in theair leaves you coughing, so again people turned to gyms and studios for relief. The filtered air in studios and gyms will keep you from scarring your lungs in air worse than Beijing’s. It all boils down to this: the heat and smoke this summer have resulted in one of the busiest summers ever for fitness businesses in the Portland area, and as we move into the fall and winter months, that business shows no signs of dropping off.
