HELP !! I need to write an essay! Your guide to writing a 5 paragraph style essay...
Essay Structure A basic essay has 3 main parts: • INTRODUCTION (1 paragraph) • BODY PARAGRAPHS (3 paragraphs) • CONCLUSION (1 paragraph)
INTRODUCTION There are 3 parts to the introduction: • HOOK: Grab the reader’s attention using an interesting opening! • TEXT: Introduce the text by naming the title and author/director and give a brief description of the plot/topic. • THESIS STATEMENT: This is one sentence that guides the entire essay. It tells the reader exactly what the essay will talk about.
HOOK • Shocking statements – Anybody who sends their children away is a horrible parent. • Scene hook – the scene hook instantly instructs the mind of the reader to picture the scene. (Describe a situation/scene) • Humour – Provide a statement that is funny or absurd. • Question – Who is the greatest athlete that ever lived? • Famous quotes –“Be the change you want to see in the world” by Mahatma Gandhi may be used while writing about fighting for your rights.
THESIS STATEMENT • HOOK: interesting opening • TEXT: identify the text and author/director • THESIS STATEMENT: • It explains exactly what you will discuss in the essay. • It states WHAT you are trying to prove and HOW you will prove it. • The thesis statement contains: TOPIC + 3 CONTROLLING IDEAS/ARGUMENTS (the controlling ideas support the topic)
SAMPLE ESSAY QUESTION/TOPIC: Do you think the pigs deserved to die in The Three Little Pigs? HOOK: “No pain, no gain”. This old saying carries a lot of truth. If you do not work hard, you will not gain anything worthwhile. TEXT: in the story The Three Little Pigsby James Orchard HalliwellPhillipps, the 3 pigs leave home and try to survive on their own by building their own house. THESIS STATEMENT: (Topic + 3 controlling ideas) The 2 pigs deserved to die because they are not obedient, they were lazy and one of them does not learn its lesson from others’ fatal errors.
BODY PARAGRAPHS • There are THREE body paragraphs • EACH PARAGRAPH follows the same PPA structure: Topic sentence PPA PPA PPA (we will only be using 2 PPAs this time) Concluding sentence ** Each body paragraph discusses ONE of the controlling ideas/arguments from the thesis**
THESIS STATEMENT: The 2 pigs deserved to die because they are not obedient, they are lazy and one of them does not learn its lesson from others’ errors. • INTRODUCTION • BODY PARAGRAPH #1 topic sentence(they are not obedient) PPA, PPA, concluding sentence • BODY PARAGRAPH #2 topic sentence(they are lazy) PPA, PPA, concluding sentence • BODY PARAGRAPH #3 topic sentence (one of them does not learn its lesson from others’ fatal errors) PPA, PPA, concluding sentence • CONCLUSION
A CLOSER LOOK... BODY PARAGRAPH #1 topic sentence: (Transition word) they are not obedient. PPA, PPA (+transition words) • Concluding sentence (+ TRANSITION): Restate your topic sentence in different words and TRANSITION smoothly (connect it) to the next paragraph. If the pigs had obeyed their mother, they would have acted more responsibly, including having a better work ethic.
A CLOSER LOOK... BODY PARAGRAPH #2 topic sentence: (Transition word) they are lazy. PPA, PPA (+transition words) • Concluding sentence (+ TRANSITION): Restate your topic sentence in different words and TRANSITION smoothly (connect it) to the next paragraph. By putting in less effort, the pigs failed to create a safe environment, which led to their deaths.
A CLOSER LOOK... BODY PARAGRAPH #3 topic sentence: (Transition word) one of them does not learn its lesson from others’ fatal errors PPA, PPA (+transition words) • Concluding sentence: Restate your topic sentence in different words. NOtransition is needed (last paragraph). As a result of not learning from the death of its sibling, the last pig endures the same fate.
CONCLUSION The conclusion has 2 parts: • Restated thesis: Remind the reader what the thesis is. Use different words and sentence structure. • Final reflections/comments: leave the reader with a final thought DO NOT INTRODUCE ANYTHING NEW!
FORMAL WRITING RULES • Do not use the 1st or 2nd person(I, my, we, us) • Do not use contractions (can’t, won’t, doesn’t). • Do not use questions...make a strong statement! Example: Should we not ensure the homeless are treated with respect?...The homeless should be treated with respect. • Do not say “The essay will discuss...” or “In my opinion...” • Avoid redundancy and repetition (be concise).
