  2. History • Stem from the Babylonians • Only surviving group from ancient Mesopotamia • Term Arminian first appeared in Assyrian writing in the 9th century

  3. Beliefs • Call themselves the “haia” • Believe that they descent from Haik (Grandson of Noah) • Haik slayed Babylonian lord • Establishes Arminian State • Cappadocia • From there, moves to Eastern Turkey • During 7th and 8th century

  4. Geography of Armenians • Location: Southwestern Asia, east of Turkey • No coastline (landlocked) • Hot summers, cold winters • Occasionally severe earthquakes, droughts

  5. Early kingdom • First Kingdom appeared around Lake Van in 13th century • Called Ararat • Empire influenced the Greeks and the Persians • Kingdom falls because of raids • Assyrians, Medes and Scythians

Genocide • Estimated One and Half Million perished between 1915 and 1923 • Done by Turks to try to make their empire as singular as possible • Subject to massacres, starvation, deportation, abduction and torture • Celebrated on April 24th • Day in which 200 high ranking Armenians were massacred

Armenian Religion • 94% of all Armenians are believers of Christianity • In 301, became the first state to make Christianity the religion of the state • Were believers of Paganism before this • King of Persia in 5th century • Armenians to renounce Christ and embrace Zoroastrianism • Armenians fought to preserve their faith • Were under the control of Islamic heavy empire for long time then the Russians and Turks

Armenian Culture • 14,000 written Armenian documents in a Library • At Institute of Ancient Manuscripts with some from 5th century • Society is some kind of Hellenistic with influenced gathered through the people that ruled them • Christians for text • Arabs and their textiles • Russians and their language • Adopted Turk custom during the Turks reign

  9. Nothing New • 1894 and 1896 over 100,000 inhabitants of Armenian villages by the Kingdom • Young Armenians wanted social reform • Turks take over with Armenian support • Turks were Muslim and conflicted with Christian Armenians -Led to attacks against

During WWI • Sided with Germany and Austria Hungary • Gave them an opportunity to get rid of the powerful Armenians • Nobody paid any attention to the genocide • To focused on the war • Disarmed all of Armenians with excuse of treason • Put into slave labor battalions • Half a million perished between 1915-23
