What is Dual Credit? • Dual Credit is a form of concurrent enrollment allowing a student to take certain courses at San Jacinto College that earn both college and high school credit. • Students take two courses in the fall semester and two in the spring beginning their junior year of high school. • Students can graduate from high school with up to 24+ hours of college credit. • More hours can be earned by taking summer courses. www.sanjac.edu

Why Dual Credit? • College experience. • Develop skill set needed to be successful in post secondary education. • Such as: note taking, reading comprehension, time management, communicating with professors, using college support services, forming study groups, etc. • Credits transfer to Texas public institutions. *Private/Out of State. • Students can decrease the time and money associated with earning a degree. www.sanjac.edu

5. Admissions • Complete an admission application at www.sanjac.edu/apply. G# will come in an email 2 days later. *Select dual credit/high school, general studies, citizen or PR, not both. Not first time in college. • Submit an Endorsement Form signed by you, your parent or guardian, and the College Now Coordinator. (This form will be distributed from the College Room after the College Now contract is returned.) • Submit documentation that you have met the TSI requirements: This can be SAT/ACT, TSIA scores, PSAT/PLAN scores (juniors only). These vary so speak with your College Now Coordinator to help guide you. • Submit proof of current Meningitis immunization to the Office of Enrollment Services, S6.161. www.sanjac.edu

6. Registration • Dual Credit students must register with the Dual Credit office at SJC S8.1000 between 7:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. M-Th to register in person. • Dual Credit Students do not have access to web/phone registration. • When you come to register, please have an exact day and time in mind for which you would like your class. • If you are taking classes other than our reserved sections, you can access specific CRN (Course Reference Numbers) associated with your classes. It is a five digit number located in the course schedule. There is an online course finder if you need assistance with this. You can also see Ms. Brannan in the College Room for assistance. • Students will be given the 55% fee waiver to be immediately taken to the Business Office and the remaining balance paid to avoid being dropped from classes. Payment plans are available for a $25 fee. • A copy of your payment receipt must be brought to the College Now office before your SHHS schedule will be changed to reflect you dual credit classes. www.sanjac.edu

7. Testing • In order to register for classes you must meet the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirement. This shows that you are college ready. • ACT- Students with a composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on the English test and the Mathematics test (21 for College Algebra) shall be exempt from those corresponding sections. ACT scores are valid for five years. • SAT- Students with a combined Critical Reading and Mathematics score of 1070 with a minimum of 500 on the Critical Reading and 500 on the Mathematics test (minimum 550 for College Algebra) shall be exempt for those corresponding sections. SAT scores are valid for five years. • PSAT- The student achieves a combined score of 107 with a minimum of 50 on the Critical Reading and Mathematics test (minimum 55 for College Algebra) relevant to the courses to be attempted. (This can be used for junior year classes only.) An eligible student who has enrolled in dual credit under the PSAT scores must demonstrate further eligibility to enroll in courses in 12th grade. www.sanjac.edu

8. Testing • PLAN- Students earn a composite score of 23 or higher and a minimum of a 19 on the English and 19 on Mathematics (21 for College Algebra) relevant to the courses to be attempted. (This can be used for junior year classes only.) An eligible student who has enrolled in dual credit under the PLAN scores must demonstrate further eligibility to enroll in courses in 12th grade. • STAAR- We are currently not able to use these scores. • TSIA- Texas Success Initiative Assessment. This is the new standard Texas exam that replaced COMPASS, THEA, and Accuplacer. If you will be taking the TSIA, please log on to http://www.sanjac.edu/testing-PAA and go to the third page to complete the pre-assessment. Print that pre-assessment and come to the dual credit office for a testing request form. This is a free test and on a walk-in basis. www.sanjac.edu

9. Course Sequence • Traditional Course Sequence: • Meet with your College Now Coordinator to verify your registration needs. Many variations can be made with their approval. Students will typically take the year long sequence listed above and then pair another course with it each semester from the box above. Students take two courses per semester. Note: EDUC 1300 should be taken in either the summer before the junior year or in the fall of junior year with HIST 1301. Students can come in the summers to gain additional coursework. All registration requests must be approved by your College Now Coordinator. www.sanjac.edu

10. Cost • Dual Credit at San Jacinto College is affordable. You pay only 45% of tuition and fees for classes that count toward both high school and college, and you may even be covered for that amount if you qualify for the Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG). Check with SJC Financial Aid for more information. • In District (6 hours of college credit) • Tuition and Fees $179.10 • Books $100 - $200 • Total $279.10 - $379.10 • Out of District (6 hours of college credit) • Tuition and Fees $289.80 • Books $100 - $200 • Total $389.80 - $489.80 www.sanjac.edu

Calendar/Deadlines • 2/27- Financial Aid Night at SHHS. • 2/28 College Now Contract due to Ms. Brannan. • 3/3 Summer Registration Begins. • 3/26 Onsite SJC Application Assistance at SHHS. • 4/10 Ms. Graham picks up Enrollment Forms from SHHS. • 4/14 Fall Registration Begins. • 5/15 Priority Deadline to Register for Dual Credit Courses. • 6/26 Final Deadline to Register for Dual Credit Courses. • TSIA Testing- On Site at SHHS, March 31st- there are limited slots available and you must have your G# with you to take the exam. You must sign up with Ms. Brannan by bringing her your printed PAA and G# in order to reserve a spot by March 21st. • If you do not take part in the on campus testing, you are free to take the TSIA test at SJCS, you must bring your printed PAA to the Dual Credit Office M-Th. from 7:30-4:00 to obtain a Testing Request Form and you will need to provide a photo ID and G#. The testing center is open until 7 p.m. M-Th. and 5 p.m. on Fri. You must be there three-four hours in advance to complete the exam. It is walk in only. www.sanjac.edu

13. FERPA • Family Education Rights and Privacy Act: • What is FERPA? The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. • Does FERPA give me a right to see education records of my son or daughter who is in college? When a student turns 18 years old or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, all rights afforded to you as a parent under FERPA transfer to the student. • What if my child asked me to register them or order a transcript? Students are free to give their S.O.S log-in information to their parents if they wish. The S.O.S account can be used to view an unofficial transcript, print a degree evaluation, order official transcripts for college/university applications, and check their class schedule. www.sanjac.edu

15. South Houston Schedule: No Class – DC AM classes – 1st & 2nd PM classes – 6th & 7th Some classes may meet outside the traditional dual credit times. Math and Science must be taken in the afternoon because of the lab times. PM classes require students to provide their own transportation www.sanjac.edu

What kind of student is a Dual Credit student? • Independent Learner • Responsible • Strong Time Management • Organized • Self Advocate (Professors / SHHS makeup work) • No Credit Recovery Issues • Grades will matter: Students can be dropped from the College • Now program for poor grades both at SHHS or San Jacinto College. www.sanjac.edu

Time Constraints Bus Schedule: Transportation is provided between SHHS and San Jacinto AM Classes Leaves SHHS for San Jacinto at 6:15 am Leaves San Jacinto for SHHS at 9:00 am *Conflict: Bus leaves SHHS before regular bus route arrives. PM Classes Transportation is not provided * Students who ride the bus must be able to provide transportation to SHHS. In addition, bus transportation will not be provided on days when only one campus is holding classes. (i.e. campus holidays) www.sanjac.edu

18. Important Points to Remember: • All deadlines must be met. Classes will fill quickly, and students might not have the opportunity to participate. • Payments must be made before drop date or students will • be automatically dropped from the course. • Receipt must be brought to the College Now office, located in the College Room, in order for the SHHS schedule to be updated for the fall. • Be diligent….the enrollment process takes several days to complete. www.sanjac.edu
