Literature reviewTHE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC WORLD OF THE FARMERS MARKETS (MARY B.LALONE)“SOCIO-ECONOMIC SETTING”“HIGHLY INTERTWINED RELATIONS”THESE POINTS WERE COMMON THEMES RUNNING THROUGHOUT THE TEXT AND I FEEL THESE ARE IMPORTANT POINTS TO CONCENTRATE ON. The LIFESTYLE OF THE CUSTOMERS AND THE VENDORS CAN POTENTIALLY OPEN UP TO US, WITH THE HELP OF ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH.
Cont…..ThIS ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH TOOK PLACE IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA. THIS RESEARCH FOUND PARALLELS TO PREVIOUS STUDIES OF FLEA MARKETING PATTERNS THAT WERE DISCOVERED IN RHODA HALPERINS STUDY IN KENTUCKY.THESE PATTERNS TEND TO REVOLVE AROUND THE DEEPER ASPECT OF MARKETS. INITIALLY THEY APPEAR TO BE “SIMPLE SYSTEMS OF TRANSACTIONS BETWEEN VENDOR AND CUSTOMER” HOWEVER THE RESEARCH SUGGESTS, AS MENTIONED BEFORE, THAT THERE IS A RICH HISTORY AND PERSONALITY BEHIND EACH MARKET. ALSO FOUND IS THE DEEP INTERTWINING OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL LIFE.
THE WIDER ISSUES AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE IN A UK SETTING.
Wider issues cont…. • This ethnographic research was carried out in America, where Capitalism is cherished by the masses, therefore, it was of no surprise that this explosion of conglomerates has effected the traditional marketplace. • This ethnographic work highlighted this fact but also found that….. • “WHEN DELVING DEEPER, WE SEE THAT THEY ALSO SERVE AS SOCIAL ARENAS FOR PEOPLE TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, LEARN ABOUT THE PRODUCE/PRODUCTS INDIGENIOUS TO THEIR AREA, AND LEARN TO APPRECIATE AND SUPPORT THE ENDEAVORS OF THEIR LOCAL FARMERS AND CRAFTERS”
Additional literature review • THE LOCAL-FOOD MOVEMENT ABD THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF GLOBAL SYSTEMS • This research is conducted by North Carolina University, Anthropology Department. Many issues are raised here with regards to this movement. • Many important issues were raised here with regards to class issues etc.
Aims of research • I think this research will be interesting as I will be able to see, through participant observation the type of clientele that frequent the market space. Additionally, with the use of interview techniques we will be able to establish why customer choose the market place and if this is a regular occurrence. • Class, age, and national stratifications may be uncovered by this process especially with regards to the Local Food Movement as it has been pointed out to me that this trend comes with middle class connotations. • I would like to focus on the industry side of the Market Place. By interviewing stall holders I hope to uncover the industrial aspect of the Market. These interviews shall hopefully give insight into the historical aspect and the present trends.
In the context of belfast • I think this research will be interesting, especially in a city like Belfast, given the historical and social context. In Asheville, the local food movement was not something that was reserved for the aspiring/middle classes. It was done with a rebellious, anti-capitalist attitude. • Belfast has a rich music history and a stand out aspect of this is not only the present day electronic scene but also the Punk culture of the 70’s and 80’s which is still relevant and visible today. Both of these scenes have a DIY, rebellious image, anti-establishment attitude.
ST GEORGES MARKET • I WANT TO MAKE THIS AN EASY TO FOLLOW PIECE OF RESEARCH. I WANT TO USE SOUNDSCAPES TO CAPUTE THE BUZZLING ATMOSPHOERE. I WANT THIS TO BE DONE IN A TIMELINE SO THE DAYS PROGRESSION CAN BE FULLY CAPTURED. • I WANT TO USE STILL SHOTS TO HIGHLIGHT THE LOCAL FOOD AND MAKE SURE THAT THIS IS AT THE CENTRE OF THE SHOT WITH INTERVIEWS FROM CUSTOMERS HIGHLIGHTING THE BENEFIT OF BUYING LOCAL PRODUCE.(IF THEY DO, HOW MUCH ETC) • I WANT TO INTERVIEW THE STALL OWNERS TO GET AN IDEA OF THE PERSOANLITY AND STORY BEHIND THE STALLS. I WANT TO CAPTURE THE HISTORY IN THE PRESENT DAY. BLACK AND WHITE FOOTAGE MAY BE THE BEST WAY TO BRING THIS SENSE OF NOSTALGIA.
