  1. Patient Centred Care A discussion session 1st May 2013

  2. Care which is • Inclusive of elements of a patient's environment or behaviour that are essential to planning appropriate care. In contrast to biomedical elements alone, which are not patient-specific.

  3. Patient centred medicine. Do patients want it? What is it? • Their results indicate that the answer is a resounding “yes.” • Patients want patient centred care which (a) explores the patients' main reason for the visit, concerns, and need for information; (b) seeks an integrated understanding of the patients' world—that is, their whole person, emotional needs, and life issues; (c) finds common ground on what the problem is and mutually agrees on management; (d) enhances prevention and health promotion; and (e) enhances the continuing relationship between the patient and the doctor. • BMJ. 2001 February 24; 322(7284): 444–445. Little et al

  4. Stories or Statistics ‘Statistics tell us the system’s experience of the individual, whereas stories tell us the individual’s experience of the system...’ Tony Sumner 2009

  5. People before numbers ‘If there is one lesson to be learnt, I suggest it is that people must always come before numbers. It is the individual experiences that lie behind statistics and benchmarks and action plans that really matter, and that is what must never be forgotten when policies are being made and implemented.’ Robert Francis 2010

  6. Statement of Common Purpose • The Government’s response to Francis is accompanied by a statement of common purpose signed by the chairs of key organisations across the health and care system. • It renews and reaffirms the commitment to the values of the NHS, as set out in the NHS Constitution, and includes pledges to work together for patients, always treat patients and their families with compassion, dignity and respect, to listen to patients and to act on feedback.

  7. Statement of common purpose • Inclusive Patient Journey (DVD) Made by volunteer patient rep members from T&G Consumer Advisory Panel working with T&G CCG link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6893Y6g96Y&feature=youtu.be • Discussion
